Bought one of these today. I bought the LP version and the cadac regulator so that I could use disposable canisters on it as well as the larger refillable cylinders.

Tried it out tonight with 1 ltr of water in a kettle. It took 13.23 mins to boil it.

I was expecting quicker and to be honest the flame seems poor as in just like a candle rather than say the Campingaz Camp briefcase stoves which you can hear as the gas is forced out of the burners. The campingaz breifcase boils water same amount in about 6.30mins.

Is this the difference between cannisters and large cylinder?

Unusable to us sadly if this is how it is rather than faulty. What chance the regulator is faulty?

Bit of a pain to go back with it as we are away in a few days.

Hi Sleeper.
You say you have bought the Low pressure version, are you sure ? I have looked at adverts for the Safari Chef and it is advertised as being high pressure ! This could be your problem!

It definately is the LP version I have checked all the online codes and the ones for this unit.

I did another test today with the campingaz camp briefcase cooker.

The blurb says 1 ltr water in about 5.30 mins. Mine took 9mins.

The info of the safari states it is about 1500w whilst the campingaz says 2000w.

Just wondering if this is how it is. Initial thoughts are its under powered but we are going to try it as a BBQ and cooker. See how it performs.

Thanks for the input. Any other thoughts? Anybody?

1500W is very low powered for a gas burner. If you've got a tiddly burner on your domestic gas hob they're about 1.4 kW.
A Campingaz Twister is 2.9kW output.

It may be that that's all it needs though if they're expecting you to use the burner to heat up a cast iron plate/griddle to cook on.

What gas are you using with it? Propane / butane or some adapter to the disposable cartridges?

Yes I wonder if this is how it's going to be. It did strike me also that the design of it may well, as you say, work better as a plate/griddle setup.

Campergiles
The original disposable Cadac little canisters with there own regulator to allow you to use these canisters rather the large bottles. They have a mix of 20% propand and 80% butane.

I contacted Cadac and they say it sounds like a faulty regulator....it's brand new and they recommended buying another! Thanks very much.

Going to try another one tomorrow. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I'll be interested to know how you get on.

I'm a bit confused with the LP / HP / regulator set up.

I've got a Campingaz 2 burner / hob cooker that I use with a 4.5kg bottle of calor butane. I'd want to use this gas for the Cadac. Which version of the Cadac would I need, and will it fit straight on or will I need to buy anything else?

Whats the difference between the Safari chef 2 and the deluxe version?

SF2s come in both low and high pressure versions, you can tell the difference thusly: the LP version uses a hose and regulator to connect to gas while the HP version uses canisters that screw directly into the body of the bbq.

HP versions are often criticised for slow heating, but the LP version, which I have, rarely does. Pleased with mine, but find disposable canisters slower than refillable to heat.

You need to buy your own regulator with the LP version and there are two types; Campingaz branded, which fits Campingaz bottles only, and EN417 regulators which fit just about everything else, but not canisters for briefcase gas rings. Campingaz is the more expensive way to go, but for a tenner I have both to prevent being caught out abroad.

Haven't heard of a deluxe version, unsure there is one.

Back from the trip with it and it cost us more money and time and it's still not right.

I have relayed the info to Cadac and see what they say.

It seems to me, that the Cadac regulator, hose and screw on fitting they produce to fit the disposable cylinders are not up to any quality. I am on third setup and to get it working whilst away we had to cut the hose off the second (non working) regulator and attach it to a new regulator that a camping shop had in stock. Strangely enough it is exactly the same one Cadac used.

It seems that if you screw the regulator and gas cartridge up to each other it ruins the pressure. If you back the canister off a few turns it works better. On one of the faulty regulators gas was coming out of the back of the on-off turn wheel.

Disappointed with the quality of the setup regarding using disposable cartridges and really lets down the great design features of the Cadac itself.

I can't see this being remedied by Cadac but i am a touch annoyed at them selling them.

I have had to buy another cooker and gas £14
I choose to cut up the cadac setup and use the hose and screw on adaptor costing £14 and then bought a stand alone regulator costing £8

It's turning into an expensive BBQ but I really want it to work.

Interesting, had to speak to Cadac myself today - I have noticed that since I changed my Chef 2 to the new quick release valve system, we have lost some of the flame - it is three years old and we use it a lot even for BBQ's at home. Cadac reckon its a blockage in the pipe perhaps and to use a process of elimination to check the valve by replacing it with the original, then the regulator and even the Campingaz bottle and finally, use our patio gas bottle. They think it is strange to loose the flame but there is definitely little difference in high and low flame. They were very helpful though and invited me to call them if things don't work out...when we first bought it, we tried to boil water too but gave up as it took so long and bought the Kampa Fizz electric kettle instead!!!
