Hi All,

So I used to go camping a few years ago but was never an avid camper and didn't really have all the get up that seasoned professionals do!

Next week, I'm going camping but this time and for the first time, we're going camping with children!!!!

I just want to make sure we've got everything we need so apart from the obvious (a tent and sleeping bags!) what are the essentials to take please?

Something to sleep on - air bed, SIM, camp bed
Something to cook on - stove, BBQ
Something to cook in - pots, pans, kettle
Something to eat with - plates, bowls, cutlery, cups
Something to keep food in - cool box, fridge
Something to sit on - chairs, blankets
Something to sit at - table
Something to light your way - torch, lantern

Not essential but useful:
Electric hook up
Storage unit
Toilet

Make sure you've got a mallet or two. Pushing pegs in by hand/banging them in with a rock is no fun.

Wine. Beer. Corkscrew. Bottle opener.

These are especially important when camping with children. As is string and gaffer tape. Larger children are best restrained with cable ties.

Thanks so much for your tips - I found the gaffer tape one particularly useful, something to use for keeping the peace

The only thing we haven't got on the list is pots, pans and a kettle. Definitely need to get the kettle but as for the pots and pans - we're not sure whether we'll get a meal for 4 people cooked in those tiny sets you get and I don't want to be taking saucepans and frying pans from home! I think eating out every night seems such a waste and a shame though so really unsure about this bit.

Depends what you want to cook and what you enjoy. There are three of us and the larger size Trangia set plus a Weber Go Anywhere barbecue has been ample. It's worth having a litle gas stove as well for coffee in the mornings/boiling large volumes of water for pasta.

We used suitcase type gas stoves for ages but moved to a Twister model a couple of years ago. They're higher output but less stable so may not be for you if you've got young kids whizzing around.

You can get some pretty decent cooksets these days - we've got the Outwell Feast L set which is a bit pricey but is lovely to cook with as it feels like a home set. In particular because the handles screw on, it feels more secure when pouring etc. We've just got back from a week using it - mostly meals cooked from scratch on site (courtesy of the onsite farm shop!).

I just use a couple of regular kitchen pots, a frying pan and a stove top kettle that I bought from B&M which are just used for camping as I also found the "proper" camping ones too small and flimsy.

Another essential - pegs! Not tent pegs, but hanging up washing pegs. I'm never without them - hanging towels, drying up cloths, badminton nets etc with them!

I use a mixture of kitchen pots and camping pots.

Usually when I go camping I light a barbecue every night. I have a barbecue from B&M Bargains that folds flat. I use the 'prepacked' charcoal bags where you light the bag, but only load the coals on one side so that there's varying degrees of heat across the grill. For two people, half a bag of 'light the bag' charcoal is enough.

We tend to leave the tent every day to do something off site, and visit a butcher and a deli on the way home at tea time.

You don't necessarily have to cook. We enjoy the sorts of meals where you pile the table with nice bread, cheese, cooked meats, sald, olives etc... and everyone helps themselves. You could serve this with a mug of soup (cup-a-soups is dead easy) per person if its cold.

Go to ALDI. They have camping stoves in at the moment.
They have a nice spirit stove in which is a copy of the Trangia stove I have. Great piece of kit.
