Hi Folks, this may sound like a silly question, but our van is old the oven is only gas and usually burns most things , so I was thinking of using a microwave.

Now I know newer vans have them, but what I want to know is can you just buy one from the likes of Sainsburys and plug it in and it will work fine? or will that be bad for the internal electrical circuitry/battery?

I should clarify that we are mainly on sites that have the mains electric hook up facilities.

Manufactures normally fit 20l capacity and a maximum 800watts..Before we had vans with fitted we either stood it on work top or if we had awning up an extension lead and stood on a table.Worth looking in places such as ASDA and other supermarkets.Also from time to time Aldi and Lidl have them quite cheap.

As birdman quite rightly says, plenty of cheap ones around .
One thing to be aware of is the higher wattage ones,used in conjunction with say,your water heater ,fridge, TV all in electric mode will trip the supply on some of the lower outputs on some sites.Can be embarrassing on some of the older EHU setups
They are a great item if you have the space.
Another alternative from B&M stores is their circular electric multicooker.About 18"diameter with a glass top ,do your whole breakfast in the one cooker ,does the whole gammet of cooking.
A gentleman next to us last year used nothing else for a whole week ,and his meals were all top notch.He even done part baked baguettes in one.
To clean it ,hot water and a wipe out.
I went straight out and bought one.Don't use it us much as that ,but great as a backup.

As an alternative to a conventional oven I'd highly recommend a halogen oven. I use mine frequently in the tent. It cooks anything a normal oven would and can also be used for toast.
Look for one with a hinged lid.

The problem with most cheap cookers of this type is that they are thermostatically controlled and still draw the maximum power but cut out when the plate reaches the lower temperature setting.

You are correct as I said previously ,but I have had no issues with it thus far with tripping supplies.
Having said that it is extremely versatile.
Perhaps I should have stuck to microwaves

Just looked at the Prolex cooker and if their specification is correct it says it is 1500W/230W,If that is correct then it has got a lower power setting but I suspect it should read 1500W/230V.
I have a similar one and agree that it is an extremely versatile item,the only drawback for me is the physical size.

To answer the original question, when the cheap microwaves supplied by the caravan makers have expired, most people buy the nearest equivalent from anywhere other than the dealers.
Our Swift fitted MW has an output power of 700 watts if that helps (I don't have the input power though). You will of course need to provide a mains socket, and ensure plenty of space all around the casing
