So we have just returned from our first camping trip with this trailer. It was bought second hand and having read the problems with the wheel bearings and in an attempt to ensure we had an event free trip I changed all 4 bearings in preparation.
The journey there was perfect (75miles) but having set off home today and covering only a couple of miles it was clear there was something wrong when a knocking noise became apparent and progressed significantly over the next couple of miles.
A stop in a lay by and a good check over revealed one of the inner wheel bearing to be on the way out, so a journey that was only meant to be a few hours ended up being 6!
So either I have received a defective bearing or have done something wrong when installing it although they were very straight forward once I'd managed to remove the hub cap.
Has anywone else had any bad experiences once a new bearing has been installed?
If they are sealed bearings did you just tap the outer ring and not the centre ring?
If the inner ring was tapped on installation then this will dislodge the bearing from the inner and outer casing which would cause the problem of a bearing becoming defective after a short while.
At least you done the job right and if three bearings are okay and one is defective I agree that you were given a faulty one. I would certainly express my concerns with retailer as you may get a new replacement FOC if you still have the receipt.
