can anyone recommend a smoke alarm for a caravan? our bailey had a fire angel which alarmed any time we lit the cooker & now alarms randomly for no reason. however it does have a battery that can easily be removed to stop it. there are reports of fire angels catching fire so I'd like to avoid them. some have lithium batteries which I'd like to avoid because they seems to burst into flames if the circuits aren't designed properly & because you can't remove them. I also just got a "first alert" from wickes which has a screw-on battery cover - not easy to remove quickly when frying your steak.
any thoughts?
Hi,
I think most will go off when cooking ,they do with me anyway if I don't use the Omni Vent running.
We have a First Alert but it is a snap clip ,so I just take the battery out before I start incinerating my bacon.
We also had a Fire Angel going off randomly.
I know it's a pain but better have them than not.
Regards,
Greg
the web tells me that another version of the first alert has a 9v battery so I'm taking mine back to wickes to see if the 9v one has a snap on cover. putting the fire angel on the floor when cooking doesn't help cos it was going off any time of day just randomly.

Hi,
Mine is a nine volt, snap on type ,I believe I bought a double pack in Home Bargains.

Ours started going off randomly in May, wonder if it just needs a new battery then? Removing the battery certainly fixed the problem, then I forgot all about it. Thought they all chirped when the battery gets low.
Can't remember the make but ours has a button which stops it for 10 minutes or so. Trouble with removing the battery is you might forget to put it back in.
Unfortunately cooking is just like a fire. In buildings we use rate of rise heat detectors in kitchens and site them carefully so as not to be close to high temperature heat sources such as the oven door being opened.
There are some clever ones now which can be heat detectors by day and smoke detectors by night but I think they're a bit too complicated (expensive) for a caravan.
Fire Angel product is very sensitive. They are very good though. But why do so many companies fit them above the kitchen. Yes it is easy to move them away from the cooker, but that leaves holes in the roof/wall. We just twiddle them off if cooking 'inside', and then replace when finished. The reminder being, leave it on one of the seats. Also....they do beep every few seconds or so when the battery is low (old style type with replaceable battery) The new ones are not serviceable. Anyone had the Carbon Monoxide one go off at all. Our Fire Angel used to go off if you had the door open in the wind! BUT we all know we must have them....must keep them in working order etc. Small price to pay for safety.
Our smoke detector started acting up recently and when I had a closer look it turned out to be 9 years old so no wonder. I too wanted the 9 Volt alkaline battery type but also with a 'Snooze' function should the toaster upset it every now & then, (it will 'snooze' for 8 minutes by pressing the button). I bought a Kidde i9060 one for less than £10 complete with Duracell battery & delivery.
