Hi guys,
Firstly a big hello from a new member :)
We went on our first few camping tips this summer and had a whale of a time, so planning on kitting myself out with new stuff ready for next year.
I've just bought a Coleman Northstar Propane Lantern only to now realise that the Coleman propane canisters are both pretty pricey and not so widely available.
Do any of you guys have any tips on either a good place to buy the propane (I'm by Manchester) or maybe some kind of adaptor so that the lantern could use propane from other brands? I've seen the plumber's blowtorches use propane, would they fit somehow?
Or could it use a gas blend like the Coleman Xtreme? I called Coleman but oddly they told me that the lantern was never sold in the UK, even though I bought it here.
By coincidence I was in the US last month and saw the gas canisters for just a couple of quid in one of the brilliant sports shops they had there.
I've read that some people have been able to re-fill their coleman bottles, that looks a good option for the future. Seems mad that two 465g canisters costs the same as my 12 kilo canister of bbq propane :D
I have a Coleman petrol lantern which is excellent but I thought the propane one would be cleaner and safer with kids around, didn't realise it would be such a hassle tbh.

Cheaper to buy a rechargable lantern?

Get a decent one and it will last an entire week on a single charge, and be more compact than the Gas one.

Quick search shows 14 hours use from a canister on medium? A battery with decent LEDs will outlast that very easily.

And without the risk of carbon monoxide also.

hi guys and thanks for your replies.
I've tried GoOutdoors but their Coleman Propane nearest stock is 30 miles away. I'll give them a call and maybe they could order me some locally, I'll post an update after I speak with them.
I agree a fuel lamp is not the cheapest method, we have an LED light for inside the tent, I'd never run a fuel lamp indoors whether petrol or gas.
This lamp is partly for camping and partly for fishing - on a night fishing trip in the dead of winter the warmth from a fuel lamp is very welcome indeed.
And you can warm a pie on top :D
