Hi,
We went camping last year for the first time as a family, and had some regular airbeds with the intention that we'd upgrade any equipment at a later date if necessary. Our 3 kids had them too, but my husband had a wide (single sized) double height Intex airbed. It was amazingly comfortable but very quickly got a puncture. We are considering camp beds for the kids and SIMs for us this year.
Would a cheap SIM be suitable for the kids or a camp bed better (ages 6,5 and 3)?
Also are there any recommended SIM's? I've found some old threads but nothing up to date. My husband is 6ft 3 so needs a decent length and we are both a bit overweight so need something well made!!
I've looked at Alpkit Dozer's, Vango Comfort (both 7.5cm) and considered the thermarest. Ideally £50 - 60 max spend each for us, but do you get what you pay for?\
Would a thinner entry level sort of one do for the kids instead of camp beds? Any experience or advice would be welcome!
Tons of threads on SIMs and camp beds. So many options and so many different opinions. It really is a personal choice.
100 people may say their SIM is perfect and 100 others will say it was useless and they bought something else which was perfect or that was rubbish also and they bought something else and then again and again.
Daughter used a cheaper SIM from Go Outdoors and she said it was fine, but whe will sleep on the bare floor also. So hard to tell whether it was any good.
Ive got two sims from costco that were about £25 each, and two from aldi that were about £15 each. We used them one on top of the other. I would say either one would be ideal for kids. We've also lent them out, and other people said they were comfy. In the summer though, we did upgrade to the Outwell Dreamboat 12cm double, which is pure luxury, but expensive!
Us two adults have 10cm deep SIMs, wider than average because hubby is big, and I wriggle.
Son has a really thin SIM - I think 2.5cm. A cheap one from Aldi/Lidl. But green. Had to be green. He's perfectly happy on that.
Daughter had a 3cm one. Wasn't impressed. Now she has a slightly thicker one and she's very happy.
I'm now thinking of upgrading the adults to camp beds and sims because we are not getting any younger, and the floor seems to be getting a bit lower and harder to get up from every year!
I've just bought 2 Outwell Dreamcatcher 10cm SIMS from Amazon, they're down to £43.85 at the moment which is a very good price in my opinion... 10cm is cheaper than 7.5cm.
We're going to try and see some tomorrow, I've seen the Outwell 7.5's are on offer somewhere else so want to get those for the kids as they're cheaper than a cheap option! My hubby is taking a bit more convincing, I'm thinking I could manage on a 7.5 with a width of 63cm, some of the xl ones are 73cm which would be great but he's taking about getting a double at 130cm wide for himself!!! He's someone that needs to try it out and see it in action before he buys, even if he's researched around and may miss out on a bargain!
We have campbeds with SIMs on top. Oldest child (12) has SIM on the floor; youngest (4) has a campbed. We tried him with an airbed and them a SIM but he would roll off both of those. With the campbed, he sinks into it and stays put!
Thank you for all your help! We ended up getting 3 x Outwell 7.5cm as they were on offer at £19.99 for the kids and husband and I have 2 x Vango Grande 7.5cm (76cm x 200cm) also on offer for £47.99. So far we've tested them and they are massively confortable, I'm quite surprised!

Where did you find the Outwell 7.5cm mats for £19.99? Sounds like you got some good buys!
In terms of getting up off the floor they're pretty low, lower than an air bed - I've heard some people put them on top of camp beds to raise them? :-)
