Hello
I'm looking forward to using a pie iron when camping soon.

I'd like to try pie iron pizza and bacon and egg toasties, and perhaps something like an apple pie too - anything simple and quick.

Any tips and recipes from other pie iron users appreciated!

I love our pie iron. Like with a sandwich toaster use butter on the outside if the bread, not marg.
we've done cheese, cheese and chopped hotdogs, apple and blackberry and sprinkle the outside buttered bit with cinnamon sugar.
Pinterest have loads of recipes. You can use ready rolled pastry as well as bread. Or roll the pastry into 'wheels' with spices and sultanas etc and make Chelsea bun type things.
Get a recipe for brownie in a mug and put that batter in there.
Or bannock bread/campfire brad.
I mix all the dry ingredients for these things into zip lock backs before I go and write in the front that needs to be added, usually an egg and some oil or water. On my plastic measure jug I measure the water needed for different recipes and mark with a line and either bread, brownies, rice etc at relevant point so I don't have to faff with a recipe when away.
I also measure out meal sized portions of rice and pasta into bags so I know I just need to grab on per day.
You're only limited by your imagination. Have fun.

Mischiefsmum your recipes sound wonderful, brownie/Chelsea buns are options I'd never have thought of!

I'll take a look at the ridgemonkey recipes and also pinterest/google for more.

I saw one youtube channel where they made veggie samosas with filo pastry which really appeals.

So many options - can't wait to start experimenting!

Apparently you can do oven chips in a Ridgemonkey. Do you think it would work in a pie iron? Wouldn't be many, though.

I can vouch for chips in a ridgemonkey, as one of the first meals I cooked in mine was pie & chips :)

The pie iron I have (Rome classic square) is only big enough to do one sandwich, so wouldn't fit many chips.

I got around to seasoning the pie iron today on the bbq and did a toasted egg sandwich. It came out a lovely golden brown with a perfectly cooked egg inside - took just under 5 minutes to cook. Can't wait to experiment more!

Had another go at the pie iron today, this time using it on the folding firebox stove and it worked a treat.

Did a cheese filled tortilla wrap, and a couple of egg and bacon toasted sandwiches

Then using sheets of ready to use Jus Roll dough made apple pastries out of the croissant sheets and a cinnamon pastry.

Really pleased with the results and looking forward to exploring more possibilities when camping!

Thank you Deborah. The Jus-Roll dough is really handy. I found if I join 2 croissant pastry triangles to make a square then cut this in half to make two oblongs, each oblong folded in half with the apple in the middle, edges sealed, fitted the pie iron lovely, with a little room for expansion.   :-)

I have not come across Pillsbury Dough, but a quick Google shows that Jus-Roll do a range of exciting pastries and doughs in a can. Endless possibilities!
