Mischiefsmum,

There are special groundsheet pegs, affectionately known as the mushroom pegs, as can be seen in the link in your last post.

They are kinder to bare feet than hook pegs.

The U pegs as seen in your link are for guys for the tent. However, I have not used these type of pegs before, therefore I cannot about their usefulness.

I prefer to use 9in angled steel pegs such as these, along with Deltas for the tent canvas; plus hook pegs to secure the ZIP of the tent in place:

The end of the long peg puller is not an U, it is a more a wide V tilted sideways, as can be seen in the pic below:

Therefore, one only needs to tilt the peg puller about 45 deg from vertical/horizontal in order to get the hook end of the peg puller into the "n".

The angle of the hook in that photograph doesn't look too bad so in most circumstances, and providing you don't bury the peg too deep leaving a big enough 'hole' for it to hook into, I am sure it will hook under the peg as you described.

I was looking for something else entirely but came across this page http://www.campingworld.co.uk/en/gb/News/Tent-Pegs-Explained/n-296.aspx

Quite a good breakdown.

Hoping to finally test pitch the Tripstein tomorro. So do I use the wire pegs for the g/sheet and the 'u' shaped ones for the guys or the other way round? Man I feel so naive, not like I'm a new camper....

That report on various pegs is a little out of date ... PeggyPegs (Screwpegs) now include an alloy screw peg, which works very well in hard/stony ground ... I have a complete set of long, medium and alloy screw pegs and sheet stretchers to suit all pitches ... and haven't had a problem for a long time ... (tempting Sod's Law, I know!)

Many thanks DK, for your response(s)... and apologies to Mischiefsmum for sending your thread a little off topic!

DK, I appreciate your comments.
With regards to the yellow delta's, I pull out as you do, but usually by using a claw hammer rather than a peg puller. More habit than anything else now, in all honesty.
When you say you can push your hook into the ground, that does of course require fairly soft ground. Notably, the hook of your puller does appear to be a lower profile with a wider angle, which seems to be more in line with my standard length puller, as opposed to the full "U" shape of my (Delta) long reach puller (Which seems to be what Bob has too?)

From your description re the Delta Rocks, I get the impression the whole of the horizontal section remains above ground, thus the T bar stay's an inch or so clear of the ground. That makes perfect sense, seems to be the sensible approach, and does of course mean that any puller hook can simply slide onto the T part of the T bar. I, however, being a complete numpty, have got into the (bad?) habit of literally burying the complete blade-like horizontal section. Reasons being no chance of stubbing a toe and/or standing on it, and no chance of the "blade" spinning around on the axis of the T Bar. This of course means my T bar is almost buried, with the crossbar tight to the ground. As I'm not in the habit of wandering around stubbing my toes on pegs, and tighten my lines enough to avoid any spinning pegs, maybe I should lighten up a little, and leave the main (horizontal) section of the Delta rock (and thus importantly the crossbar of the peg itself) clear of the ground, (Or just bury the "blade" 10mm or so, to avoid any possible spinning?) and ultimately be easily accessible to (any) peg puller!
Sometimes, my own OTTness can be more of a hindrance than an advantage!

For what it is worth, I shall inform Dorothy Ort to let her know about the issues with regard to the long peg puller as mentioned above.

Perhaps she could do something with the hook part of existing stock or the ones already sold.

Like Mucker, we use a claw hammer. It's easy to control, does the job (both knocking pegs in quickly and efficiently on hard ground and peg-pulling when striking).

We do have a regular length Delta peg-puller (the best quality, ever!) and use that for removing the wire pegs when the ground isn't so solid. For removal of our stainless Deltas, it's always the claw hammer. I guess for anyone who's physically challenged, the long-handled puller might be more helpful.

I wouldn't fancy pulling out rock pegs via paracord loop and a long-handled puller near my canvas, simply because I can envision accidents occurring. As Ewan says, that's more for when using another peg to extract, or pulling with your finger. The combo of long puller and loop might just be a recipe for peg-through-canvas, if anyone is a bit too enthusiastic...

In light of Lidds' post above, I would just like to clarify that I only use the claw hammer for extraction. For peg insertion, I use a bloody gret lump hammer, partly due to being a weakling, and partly due to a lousy aim when using the small headed claw hammer!

Well, just home and pulled out the v pegs by paaracord loop and long puller. No pegs went flying. We didn't use rock pegs as the ground was soft but I have used the long puller with rock pegs and not suffered from flying pegs.

And have a muddy mess around the tent?! Never heard that one before and it's not a tip I'll be rushing to try myself (everyone has to work out what suits best for them, of course, and if it works for you then great).

A claw hammer is easy and clean to use. And more precise than a peg puller as well.

HI, Lidds0 ,when I say tip water on them I don't mean buckets full ,bout a cup full or two at most , I have also got and old cranked crowbar which I ground the end to suit rock pegs ( fits nicely under the plastic bit and doesn't damage it ) , I bought it for 20P at a local car boot sale which I have lent out to campers should the acme water method not work ,but usually the water trick does the job . The acme crowbar can cover practically all other pegs too
