Compressed air didn't do it, so stripping down it was. My main worry was that the thin foam seal around the top groove was stuck down and would tear on removal. In the event it wasn't and removal gave access to the 7 screws holding the lid together. Once undone it gave access to the fan blade which I cleaned with a brush. Job done! Hope this helps anyone with a similar problem.
