The best way to look at it is convert the sizes to imperial and then you get a better idea of the sizes involved.
888 minus 897 = 9 cms. which is around 4 inches. That means that the awning is 4 inches longer so you have to lose about 2 inches at either end which can be achieved if you pull the caravan onto a pair of ramps about 2 inches high. They always advise to go just slightly higher in size anyway just in case the ground slops away from the doorway. Too short and the pegging out becomes impossible so my guess is that it would fit based on the information above.
The awning rail on our caravan (according to the handbook) is 886 cms. but our awning is a 900 cms. and not had any major issues.

I read the post the other way.

Caravan = 897cm Awning size.

Awning they intend on buying = 888cm max. So its over 3.5" too small.

The awning probably wont touch the ground nearest the van. You may struggle to peg it out.

When I suggested going slightly higher it didn't actually mean going to the next size up as that would be too big. The difference in this instance could be as much as up to 28 cms. which is almost a foot longer. Trying to lose 6 inches at either end is going to be virtually impossible even with the caravan on ramps so you need an awning 875-900 cms. Different awning manufacturers apply different sizes to their awnings so it's not a case that all sizes are identical so you always need to go with the awning length. However, in the link below is the Dorema sizing chart (scroll down) which their 875-900 is actually a size 10 which is the same size as mine. I know that the next size up would be too big which would be impossible to peg out and also lead to pooling (rain water) on the roof due to the fact that the material can't be pulled taut.

If you are buying a second hand awning it may have size 10 on the label but make sure that the awning hasn't been altered for custom reasons. Some people will change their caravan but rather than splash out for another awning they have the existing one altered professionally merely because it's the cheaper option of the two. Just a word of caution that's all because someone I know bought a used awning a few years back but the seller didn't state that the awning had been shortened so they ended up with an awning that was too short.

If I was after an awning of the correct size in good condition at the right price I would travel from South Yorkshire to the Midlands to collect. When I sold my 780 cms. Bradcot awning, the buyer came from Redcar to collect and was really pleased with their purchase and said it was well worth the long journey.
