I have been thinking about cooking when camping and on our longer trips (longest being 24 days so far) I would like to be able to cook things that need an oven. I know that some of you use halogen ovens and have a few questions. I have already searched on here and read about 40 halogen oven threads

I have been researching them online and found a couple of things that said they don’t cause the same smell as normal ovens, is that true? I don’t want a stinky tent.

I am wondering what size I need. There are 3 of us. Almost all the pictures online show them with chickens in (why I have no idea) and most recipes seem to be for meat. We won’t be cooking chicken as we don’t do meat, haven’t for many, many years but there are plenty of other things we would cook. The smallest seem to be 7 litre, then 12 litre. I was thinking of a 12 litre as you can get one with a hinged lid. It seems to me that a hinged lid might be safer as I won’t need to find somewhere to put it down.

Any comments on lids?
And would 12 litre be OK for 3 people?

Problem with 12 litre is the size (48x34x32cm) the 7 litre is only (30x30x21.8cm).
Would the 7 litre be big enough for 3?
Could I live with a lid I need to put down?

In terms of cooking could I put spuds and carrots in the bottom with a little oil cook them for so long and then add quorn fillets on the top rack and cook until all done?
How little oil can I get away with for them to still cook well?
Do the spuds need to be par boiled?

I assume I could easily do veg sausages or burgers on the bottom rack and hash browns on the top.
I guess things like jacket potatoes and pizza are easy to do
Part baked rolls? Thinking I might not be able to do the longer ones in a 7 litre, do they even fit in a 12 litre?

Can I put any ovenware in it as long as it fits? A casserole dish for example?

Hubby is convinced we don't need one and can't fit it in the car. I think using our new slimmed down kit we could fit one in but the 7 litre would be much easier to fit than the 12. As I do all the cooking when camping I figure that if I want one to expand the meal options I will get one

Hi purplebean, there are 4 of us, we have a 12L oven which does us just fine. ours has a metal ring which extends the cooking height. I keep it all in the box being 37x37x27 so not as big as some newer ones by the sound of it. Mine is a Prolectrix infra chef which isn't sold now by the looks of it, did you know JML do a 10.5L which looks very similar and may fit your requirements size-wise?

I really like ours, does the best jacket spuds. Also cook sausages, breaded fish, chips, sausages, pizza, pies - the usual quick food for teas. I would say by reading our recipe book, enamel type roasting tins should be used along with wrapping food in foil to steam (fish & veg). I would have thought a pyrex dish would be ok though as the bowl is glass, but not tried it. I tend to use just a spray of oil to stop food sticking and then rotate the top shelf and bottom shelf of food to get an even cooking. I should think you can cook almost anything that you would do in a conventional oven. I tend do put it on for 10-15 mins then keep an eye and turn the food rather than leaving for a set time.

Our oven came with a metal stand for the lid, which is perfectly ok to put down on one side on your camping kitchen. It does get hot so need to keep little ones away.

We have never noticed a foody smell when using ours. One of these days I'm going to try the roast dinners on all the photos just to see if it works!!

Hello PB. I wouldn't write off a conventional mini oven - ours is not much bigger than the dimms mentioned at 42(w) x 36 (d) x 25 (h) cm plus you can stuff it full of plates / pans / tea towels in transit. No breakable bulb or glass bowl or white hot lid to worry about and it's never made our tent stinky.

Another vote for a mini oven as opposed to a halogen oven, we have both but when our first what was then not a halogen oven but a normal type element went up the swanny we bought a halogen and what a waste of time it is compared to the old one which is no longer made, it is ok for jacket potatoes and that is about all, the old one was brilliant, cooking evenly but this thing only seems to want to cook the top even thought it's of course a fan oven.

For my money stick to a lidl's mini oven, we have two, one the better half uses nearly every day and one in the caravan, and would never be without one now using it more than the household oven by a long way.

For anyone wanting a oven when camping but who doesn't want to carry a huge item or something which may trip the lecci, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Lakeland Remoska. The standard size is sufficient for 3 people and theres a bigger one (Grand) for larger families.

They are expensive, yes, but they have a lifetime warranty (or at least they did when we bought ours!). They're absolutely excellent, cook as good as a conventional oven (only are easier to use and need no pre-heating). They are frugal on electricity: 400W for the standard and 580W for the larger one. They are a doddle to clean. I honestly can't rate them highly enough and it's one piece of kit we never go without (and couldn't do without).

Shall I throw microwaves into the mix?

I have just sold my mini oven and bought a microwave. I feel I will be able to cook far more quick meals in a microwave than a mini oven with less mess and washing up to do. The outside of a microwave doesn't get hot either. Veggies can be steamed with a little water added. Most meats can be cooked, bacon, burgers, etc.

Downside is that they are quite heavy compared with a mini oven and the food won't necessarily go brown but I gather you can get microwave browning dishes. I haven't used it yet but it will go with me on my very next trip (not sure if I will be able to resist the fish and chip shops though). Even if I just get a bacon buttie in the mornings it will be worth it

Hello purplebean.

Halogen ovens take a lot of current at switch on, this often causes the 'Breaker' on the EHU to trip.

My wife was miffed because she bought one on recommendation.

I solved the issue by bypassing the Breaker, at a quiet time when no one was about.

I DO NOT encourage anyone else to do this.

I did undo the bypass when we left the site.

As for the aroma? Perhaps just the newness?

Regards James

Hello Purplebean -

I really like my halogen and I would not be without it now when camping for long stretches. Last summer it was very convenient especially after a long day out. We would cook the food in the oven rather than on the BBQ. Whilst it's cooking we would shower and get ready. With the timer it makes it very easy as you are not worried about over cooking /burning the food whilst otherwise engaged.
I have square stainless steel trays/tins that I use. They are light and have a lip so easy to take out as well as clean.
If I could change my oven I would swap it for a hinged one. Two reasons, firstly I find the lid heavy and secondly the need for space to place the lid. Not sure if you can extend it though if it had a hinged lid?The ring is handy.
My mother-in-law has a Remoska and loves it. She uses it at home instead of her conventional oven.

I hope this helps, 😀

I recommend a standard small electric oven with fan, grill setting too from somewhere like lidel. we are a family of 3 and take it camping, use it a lot warming breakfast pastries , part cooked loafs ,pizza, lasagna ,roast veggies ,meat ,quiches.
store items in it on the way to camp.
Use it at home too.

I can say we've never had any problems with EHU tripping whilst we've been on site using our halogen.

hi I have a 7 litre halogen in the van as usually only me. also have a microwave but love my halogen use a 12 litre one at home all the time. never had any problem re tripping electrics it's a much easier and cleaner way to cook no smells. I don't like the oven in the van tends to cook uneven for some reason plus I/m always on hook up so might as well save my gas. if you cooking full meals for three people I would go with the 12 litre size so you can cook everything together.

Thanks for the replies folks. Now I can't decide halogen or mini oven!!

Hubby says it doesn't matter as neither will fit in the car!!

Think I will go and have a look at a few

I was quite pleased with this evening's effort. Only one shelf in our oven, so I used a stout foil to separate the meat (sorry) from the spuds.

Nom, as the young people say, nom nom.

I'll throw another option in!
I bought an oven/rotisserie/grill a couple of years ago from Lidl when they were
on offer (c£40).

Large enough for family, free standing, pack tea towels etc in when travelling.

Its in a quite a large box so takes space.

I found it far more useful than the mini ovens.

I have a 7 litre in the van, a 12 litre at home and haven't used my normal ovens for years. They are different to use from conventional and you will almost certainly have a few disasters, but well worth the effort of perserveering. Obviously, the larger oven is more useful as it is easier to cook more types of things with the extra room.

The hinged lid halogen oven (our Andrew James version) could take an extender ring. It could also be programmed for 1hr 59mins. Removable lids just for one hour.

However, I prefer a removable lid in a tent - I just put it down on a glass chopping board. The hinged lid crashed down a few times.

I found removable easier to clean. Smell tends to be when used a few times without cleaning. I use a quiche dish to collect fat and empty when liquid. I wash it all properly perhaps once a week (glass bowl and racks in dishwasher).

I love mine. Main issue on campsites has been Halogen oven & kettle as it boils.

I've cooked many chickens in ours - our two year old cooker oven has been used twice! To test it and when our halogen oven bulb went whilst awaiting a replacement!

Ours travels with the lid upside down packed with tea towels. On the way back it houses dirty racks to go in dishwasher. It fits in a plastic trug to give an idea of size.
