Hi, we tend to use ehu so no need for battery lamps.

But my son and his family are coming camping with us. We have bought them a tent but wish to get a lamp for them to use,but want too surprise them when we get there.

So any thoughts on what type of lamp we need to get for them?
Battery,rechargeable etc.

Outwell Carnelian Lantern around £30 and delivers 600 Lumen, not quite as bright as a Single Mantle Gas Lantern (80w) but not far of at around 50 watt.

Runs of 6 "D" Cell batteries so best to get some rechargeable cells, Aldi/Lidl do them for £1.50 each.

There is a Lithium-ion USB rechargeable version although that is only 250 Lumen, so not worth bothering with.

Been running my 2 Outwell 400LX's lanterns (400 Lumens) of 6 Lidl/Aldi NiMh batteries since 2010, got two sets of batteries so 24 units.

Both Aldi/Lidl do the chargers, quite good one's in fact that can take most of the Cell types.

One set of fully charged batteries has got me through 4 weeks of camping, with plenty to spare.

Would be nice to have Lithium-ion Cells, but they are 3.7v each not 1.5v.

Maybe with the new 2170 Lithium-ion cells now going into mass production, things may change.
