My vans a 1991 model with the original fridge and it works great.
If using inside a tent then you do not want gas running 24/7. There have been several deaths in recent years from people using gas in tents.
And yes they need to be level to work properly.

Don't buy a 3 way 'fridge' please. There's a reason why they aren't used in the refrigeration industry.. they're inferior in many ways to a compressor fridge.

The reason why 3 way fridges are not used in the refridgeration industry is because they are not industrial appliances. Who would consider buying a fridge operated by 12 volts for industrial purposes?
3 way fridges were designed and built for leisure purposes only and the majority of them work well IF you know how they function. All this information can be found in caravanning handbooks so you get ALL the information you need to know regarding levelling, temperatures (when to fit external vent covers), allowing the fridge to breathe when an awning is erected, what outside temperature the fridge should be switched over to gas to function effectively. Lots to read about so it's not just a matter of which is best but what sort of fridge suits your everyday needs when camping as well as travelling.

We got the Mobicool C40 from Obelink back in 2013 for £139 inc shipping.
And for our fortnight or more camping in the South East of France during July, it has been brilliant.
The slight purr from the compressor when it kicks in, does not waken us in the dead of night, so I would not be concerned about the sound level from the compressor.
It also gets well used at home when defrosting the home freezer, and comes in handy at Christmas as a white wine chiller!
