Hi all, just after a quick bit of advice. Have bought a second hand (in good condition) roof box and fitted my bars etc today. My question is whether the thumb screws that tighten the u bolts should go on the inside of the box or under the bar. My gut is that it goes on the inside. The   box is unbranded.

Inside the box usually. That's how I have mine though I also bought some neoprene washers to help seal it

The screws must go inside the roofbox otherwise if they were visible under the two rails then any potential thief could just unscrew the 4 clamps underneath and remove the roofbox.

Hi,

I have been debating this as I too have just acquired a roof box.

I drive a berlingo so its pretty high up, fastening the screws on the side that hinges from the insde can be done but I had to get the step ladders out to be able to reach.

I was going to do them from undereath, noting the comments about theft, whats anyones though on doing the hinged side from underneath and the open side normally?

Didn't the roofbox come with any instructions?
If you look at the shape of the 'C' clamps they have a radius at each of two bends so if you put the clamps through the two mounting holes inside the roofbox the hole centres will be encroached so the radius' will effectively distort the base of the roofbox when tightening up onto the rails. This could lead to a weakness and the roofbox being whipped off in high winds as the instructions with mine did specifically state not to exceed 60 mph. and that's with the clamps fitted from the underside.
