We have air beds to sleep on for next week (if our camping habits pick up I'll look at paying out for good sims but for now this is what we have) and I was wondering has anyone added a mattress topper to add to the comfort? I struggle with my hips at night and wondered if a topper would soften the bed and also help with the cold issue?? Can get cheap ones in Argos for about £20.
Ha, well the one ive seen is only thin, not a big memory foam. TBH we normally just put a thick fleece throw on, might just stick with that. You'd think someone would have invented some amazing, not overly expensive solution!
You know what, for £20 - and the difference of having a comfy bed on holiday next week or not - I'd give it a shot!
One year when we were away and on airbeds, my back was so bad I considered doing the same thing, even if it meant chucking the tripled-in-size-after-opening memory foam topper before coming home. Then I priced up the toppers (we were in France) and decided I'd better just put up with the discomfort!
Nowadays, we have Thermarest Dreamtime XLs, which have a thin layer of memory foam on top of the SIM (super comfy!). They're a bit on the big-side to carry but I wouldn't/couldn't be without them.
I use full height intex airbeds, have never had an issue with cold nor has anyone who has camped with me.
The cheap, low airbeds did cause me some back issues but that was mostly that they cant go firm enough and because getting up from floor level is difficult for me - I have an injured back.
Simply to protect the airbed I now use fleece mattress covers and have to say they do make it a little more comfortable just in having a bit of an air gap I think. I just bought the £9 ones from amazon.
I'm actually finding it difficult to find ones to fit the singles though as they are actually Metric singles or what the americans call twins (have no idea how they came up with that)
Memory Foam topper all the time for me. Went camping in Cornwall for 2 weeks some years ago, when half way through my back gave way. A quick trip to Argos and a 3" thick Memory Foam Topper worked a treat. A 3" does take some room when packing but I just fold it in half and put it last into my trailer. I don't think I could go camping sleeping on an airbed without the Memory Foam topper now. I did buy a blow up airbed with a topper fitted but found it just wasn't thick enough, so reverted back to the 3" Topper. We use a full size airbed but couldn't get comfy with my Glass back as the ridges of the bed make my back ache. No such problem now as I don't feel any ridges of the bed and sleep sound even near the end of the 2 weeks. When I get home I just throw the topper on top of my bed for extra comfort and alleviates the nightmare of storing it somewhere at home.
Oh the joys of getting old
