Time to replace my old battered 3D maglite, can anyone recommend a torch for camping.

Would be good if it could be charged up via usb because we always have a battery pack with us these days for the phones.

Can you get usb chargeable ones that are bright enough now it's all LED?

Maybe I need a big bright one to replace this and a good quality pencil one for portability.

It's hard to tell what's cheap tat and what's worth paying a little extra for on amazon\ebay

thanks for any pointers...

Aldi had a decent 10watt Cree LED torch in, USB charging and was Lithium ion so run time would be decent, price was £25 or so.

Thrunite do a TC12 that's usb rechargeable, I have a TN12 by them (not rechargeable) and it's a quality torch.

I generally take a Xtar VC4 battery charger with us that charges lithium, nimh & nicads and has a usb lead so can be run from powerbank.

Any Cree headtorch is usb chargeable. I carry a power bank for mine when hill walking but I also bought spare batteries and a charger.

Petzl Tikka RXP is the best torch I've ever used. Everyone I've ever let have a go with it has gone out and bought one.

Not really a torch as such but I picked up a goal zero micro lantern in Go Outdoors recently. Worked very well as a tent light plus its small enough to hold in your hand to take to the toilet etc. That particular model wouldn't be that great as a spot beam although on full power it is pretty bright. Has a choice of 2 or 4 led's on - and then depending on which you've chosen you can then dim it down. We were away for a week and I was turning it on dimmed on 2 LED's when we left the tent at about 7pm each evening and leaving it on until gone 10pm when I turned in on my return. I think it had just one of its 4 charge lights gone out by the end of the week with no charging.

They do a more expensive version with a torch beam built into the top but haven't tried that one so can't comment on it.
