I kind of like one of these hanging from the ceiling in my little two man as it can get crowded and messy inside due to the lack of space which makes the search for a head torch sometimes a little tricky even when placed in the side pockets. They are also reasonably waterproof if you want to take them outside.
Batteries last well a reasonable beam, but a decent head torch never goes a miss either. My Pretzel which is a few years old now does 3 brightness settings, gets through the batteries a little more quickly but I use it for walking the dog around the forest at night so it can get a lot of use in the cold.
If you want something a little more powerful with a long range but does eat the batteries, one of those metal "tactical military" batteries does alright, but they do weigh more and some of them can cost over a £100.
Personally I prefer my head torch with the glow in the dark torch in the tent.

They look pretty good, thanks KewGardener. At 200 lumens they're pretty powerful and, although not cree and not rechargeable, they look like a bit of a bargain!
The petzl tikkina head torch does everything I would want it to for about £15. Single LED, two or three brightness settings. I think we've got three knocking around now, bought over about five years or so.
The only thing that it's missing is a red light, but most people (including me, if I'm honest) don't use the red light that much (although it's handy if you're reading next to someone who is trying to sleep).
Also - for a handheld torch, we got this one for my son and it's ridiculously bright - and now it's on sale!
Not sure if it's waterproof, though (although it IS eight year old-proof).
Whilst I'm droning on, we got these head torches for the kids and they’re basically fine. Styling isn’t up to much and the elastic isn’t up to Petzl standards, but they do the job very well for £6!
