Hi
Just been reading up on past posts about solar panels because we are thinking about going to the Scottish Highlands ( + Skye + North Yorkskshire ) next summer and a lot of nice looking sites I have looked at don't have electric.
I was thinking about how we'd manage if we didn't have electric hook up.
I know we wouldn't have TV.
We cook on gas. Some lights run on battery.
What about toilet and shower?
I would love to know what we could use without hook up and what size ( portable ) solar panels would we need?
+ are they any good?
Would love to just couple a solar panel up to battery and forget it for duration of holiday.lol.

Cheers

We use a 150w folding panel, gives out 8amp in full sun; even with 3-4hrs TV usage a night and all the other 12v equipment the caravan has, the 110amp battery is charged back up by lunchtime or late afternoon if cloudy.
We us C&CC Temporary Holiday Sites now, cheap prices, more outings with longer stays. Go for it!

Toilet needs 12 volt for flush pump if it is electric. If its a manual pump then none needed.

Fridge runs on gas
Water heater should run on gas
Water pump runs on 12 volt

All these will run from the battery for a week or so with no solar panel in summer.

Solar panel will allow you to use in spring & autumn with longer nights and maybe run a 12 volt TV for a while.

The shower would be the biggest draw. Normally your water pump runs for a few seconds at a time.

If you must use your own shower then run it to wet yourself and switch it off. Wash your hair and soap yourself completely then run it to rinse off. Dont leave it running all the time.

If the lights are not LED then consider swapping them.

Waterheater uses gas for the heat but needs a 12v supply.
Some fridges also need 12v.

I so want one of these for our tent to charge our gadgets.

I would be so nervous leaving that outside the tent havnt seen any on the camping fields yet ?

Does it have the facility to just have a extension lead plug into it and then we can use from that.

Technology its great isn't it :)
Regards
