Hi all - the bungee on my trailer cover is suffering a serious case of brewers droop so I have ordered some new bungee. I bought some heavy duty 8mm stuff.

Didnt for a minute consider how to 'terminate' it. The current bungee has the 2 ends crimped together with some metal hoops which I now understand to be called 'hogtails'.

However it seems you have to buy hogtails in bulk and also need a set of hogtail pliers which all makes it a more expensive job then buying an entire new trailer cover (which I'll be doing in a few weeks anyway)

What other ways are there to join the 2 ends. Will a simple knot be strong enough?

A knot will work if you can stretch it enough to secure. Easier would be a simple cable tie

I simply knotted mine also, A little flame over the ends to stop if fraying.

Not too much you dont want to burn it, just enough to melt the cover slightly.

You could use a crimp connector as used for joining electrical cables. Have a look on Ebay item 122257070372
8.2 diameter £1.95 each

I'm not sure a cable tie would hold the ends together under pressure? I have hundreds of cable ties though so if you really think this would work it would be the easiest fix.

Birdman, thanks for that. Would these be suitable for flexible bungee? It looks like it would slip out. Also the ebay listing doesnt give any actual info about what they are or how they work - just 3 sets of measurements for each which isnt a whole lot of use lol.

I have used cable ties to attatch a carabiner type hook to 8mm bungee and it worked well, when the ties are pulled tight they compress the rubber of the bungee and are very secure although not the prettiest of joins. For a better finish cover with heatshrink.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I've temporarily used a reef knot to get the cover tight as the old bungee was just awful and looser than a clown's pocket.

I'm extending the trailer this week so once the extension sides are on (please please let them fit!) I'll make sure the cover fits and where/if I need any additional hooks and then can use some ties to finish the job and trim it permanently

They are made to crimp on. But you could put the cord in and then hit with a hammer and punch in the centre of each side to dent it in to grip. I did it with bungee for cover on a trailer of mine a few years ago.
