I have searched on this, but no topics are quite what I'm after so I'm starting a new topic.
I would like to get a tow bar mounted bike rack for 4 bikes and one of the main things is that I want access to the boot (it's a Golf estate). Something like the Buzz rack Buffalo looks suitable but I wondered if anyone has experience with this, or other tilting racks, because the boot lid is often lower on an estate.
Any general recommendations would also be useful. I only intend to use it for 4 bikes occasionally and I'm no too worried about the lifting of bikes onto the rack - we're all quite strong! The 4 bikes are 2 adult and 2 kids. Mostly it will be used for The 2 kids bikes and mine.
The weight of the bikes will add to your towbar noseweight, from what I'm told a bike typically weighs between 10kg and 14kg, what's the nose weight limit for your car?
Auto Express recently did a group test of tow bar mounted bike racks, the Maxxraxx came out ahead of the Buffalo.
Unfortunately I don't have any actual experience with either of these
I have a maxxraxx premier 4 bike model, they do tilt and allow access to the tailgate, go on their website and check out the videos and also their specs, they are very informative.
Another vote for MaxxRAxx. I've had mine for quite a few years now and it's great. I can tow and carry bikes, it tilts and it's easy to fit and take off again. And, if you give them your UK Campsites membership number when you order, you get a discount as well.
Thanks for the replies. Will have a proper look at the MaxxRaxx.
Geoff - I'm new to the whole towing idea and don't even have the tow bar yet. Nose weight isn't the same as towing weight (which is on the log book) is it? I haven't got the nose weight figure (will have to dig out the handbook), but only one of the four bikes is light enough to fit into your 10 - 14 kg weight range! Kids bikes are usually steel framed and heavy. I'd take a wild guess at 80 kg total for the four bikes.
