Have just bought a trailer to tow camping equipment, I need a lock to stop or deter thieves when it is attached to car if I leave it for a few minutes if I stop at Motorway Services for example and also when it's left at a campsite, any recommendations please ?

I never leave my trailer at the services or similar areas.
On a lot of small trailers the hitch can be removed with an air gun in seconds (two bolts) and soon manhandled into a van or similar. Else they can force the lid or slash the cover to gain access.

Common to steal secure caravans at the services so best not to take any chances and risk a spoiled holiday. The OH and I take turns using the facilities.

On site I just used a small Lock as a light deterrent.

Anyone with any real intent will easily drag a small trailer away.

The other suggestion I received when I asked a similar question was to use one of the dog lead screws right under the axle and apply a lock, possibly one with an audible alarm. Would put up a little resistance and potentially create some noise when disturbed.

Any wheel clamp to fit a camping trailer wheel should be okay. However, make sure you get the right type depending on whether the trailer wheels are steel rimmed or alloy as the bolts on alloy wheels are recessed and steel ones are not so the clamps differ somewhat. If you need something in a storage box that's not too bulky and easy to fit then the 'SAS' wheel clamp is well worth considering and insurance approved too.

We have a 19mm hardened galv chain, 2m and a Yale Brass Padlock.

The Padlock is a long reach type say 2.5".

The Padlock goes through the Hole on the Swan Neck tow bar mount.

To be fair it's more of a visual deterrent, the 2m chain looks like it was used for the anchor chain on the Titanic, in fact the chain is from a boat yard!

As already mentioned, we also never leave the Trailer unattended at Motorway services, or if we need to do some supermarket shopping along the way.

Easy when there are the two of you or more, but a challenge if you are going solo of course.

You could also get a hitch lock. You can lock it to the car when attached and also use it when the trailer is on its own. Wheel lamp and hitchlock together make good anti theft devices.

We use a hitch lock and have 2 wheel clamps - not both used at once as they are different (?? ask Mr F).

It is not this one, but this style http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/maypole-trailer-wheel-clamp-8-10-in-p367692?gclid=Cj0K.........

Second that. Hitch lock when connected to the car and wheel lock on site or at home.       You can never stop somebody who is really determined, the idea is to make them look for something easier to steal. Same goes for a lock on the lid of the trailer, it's more to stop a casual theft than anything else. Have been using trailers/trailer tents and folding campers on sites for over 40 years and never had anything stolen.

If we need to stop anywhere we usually go separately or overlap. Such as he goes with children & I stay for 5-7 mins, then I pop off to the toilet & he returns to by the car so it is only left for a short time.

We also try & park somewhere busy, near a light or a camera. So the thieves have good light, a crowd to watch how speedy they are and can then look at themselves on camera at the police station!!
