Anyone got any recommendations for camping lanterns for a small tent (but also useful for power cuts at home). Need to be battery operated - don't use EHU. Haven't an issue with rechargeable ones if they come with USB and car charger but I do have a problem because some rechargeable battery items cannot be delivered to islands!!! Ideally, want something that will provide decent light when needed but I can dim to reading level at night.

Needs to be free-standing but with hook to attach to tent and not too heavy.

Any suggestions, please?

Check out the aldis thread - aldis have them very cheap and with LEDS I do think using alkaline batteries is so efficient I wonder whether its worth the hassle of rechargeables (which often fade if not used)

I use a 300 lumen lantern the same as this one although mine is made by LE. It does have a dim and a bright but there doesn't seem much difference between the two settings. It can be hung anywhere with a hook on the bottom and the lens cover can be removed cutting out shadows, or stood on a table. It takes 3 'D' cell batteries which I have not had to change yet after a year of intermittent use. It replaced an ordinary table lamp I used with EHU and I much prefer it. I bought two and keep one at home for power cuts. You can get them with 500 or 1000 lumen I believe.

Incidentally...if you divide lumen by 12 it gives you roughly what power an old style light bulb would be. So 300 lumen would be equivalent to a 25 watt light bulb (roughly)

I have a couple same as Bob linked to. Work very well. Same design has several brand names. The type in the link have clear lense which can be a bit glarey. One of mine is same but with diffused lense which is better. That one is Varta brand.

I also use a lantern similar to the one in Bob's link. It uses 3 "D" batteries and they last forever. I have had it for 3 or 4 years and it still works fine, unlike a couple of rechargeable lanterns that I had previously.


Mine has a green LED that flashes every few seconds, this makes it easy to find in the dark during our regular power cuts up here.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I'm looking to getting two, one for camping that'll come in for use in our power cuts and one that'll stay in the house for DS!

There are times when it get VERY frustrating not being able to get to a camping store!!!

Its worth a look at CPC - they do a huge range of this kind of thing. I have a monster 1000 candlepower LED rechargeable from them which was crazy cheap in one of their sales. They don't seem to have them at the moment sadly but I am looking at the Vango 60 lantern right now for myself as its solar rechargeable, windup rechargeable and also has a car adapter for charging which means it will take mains recharging with the right wall wart.

Normally on a campsite I get a hookup but I want something thats independent on mains power as a backup.

I found the flashing light a little irritating in a tent but make sure it is facing away from the sleeping pod when hung up in the living area. You could also put some black tape over it.

Black Diamond’s Voyager lantern would fit the bill: excellent ambient light and a directional “torch” for reading, or both at once, and dimmable. And it collapses for packing.

Picked up two lights from "The Range" earlier this year and have been very impressed with them. Essentially a soft plastic container (useful for storage) with a solar powered light lid that can be charged via usb and only £4, three light settings of bright, dim and flashing colour options are available, these have been brilliant in the garden and on my 3 trips so far this year. The bonus for me is they can be left on while the kids fall asleep without needing spare batteries and charge themselves next day for more abuse.
Got many tent lanterns ranging from orb (single battery) to the heavy duty 4 D cell type and a many in-between, personally for the price of four 'AAA' batteries these things are fantastic!
My eldest daughter wants to put a packet of skittles in one to enhance the ambiance 😎

I noticed one on Amazon the other day, claiming to have warm white LEDs (Weltool portable camping lantern). What does anyone think to it?

For safety in a tent I would certainly go for solar lantern(s). Warm white is also more friendly than those that give a cold, bluish light.

Another vote for the type that Bob61 inks to. I've got a couple (of different manufacturers labels, and slighlty varying in design) A 300lumen one and a more recent 1000 lumen one.
The latter one has a warm white setting whicjh is not as bight ut aesthetically pleasing.. The seign of the 30 lumen one though is better when hung up upside down (the 'glass' comes off.

I like the life o f them on D cells as opposed to AA. I have used a couple of rechargeble ones, but always ended up at some point with them running out of charge.

We have a couple of smaller ones like this, which are ok, they get used insiode the pop up tents etc. But the LED's are if anythign too bright as not behind any sort of diffuser.
