I normally use Camping Gaz for cooking - more out of historical use than any particular preference. Recently though we finally used up a 904 cylinder and the price for a replacement was

eeek ! For the past few years we have travelled light so mostly used a jetboiler or one of those single ring jobs that use a can of butane - we inherited a boxful of butane cartridges so have tended to use those up so the Camping Gaz cylinder has taken like 5 years to empty. This year cos we "glamped" in our new tent with all mod cons and I cooked at home (i.e. baked beans, chilli, Tag Bol on our new stove I managed to get through the remains of our trusty old 904 cylinder.

The price was quite alarming plus the new Vango Combi IR Grill was less than impressive on the grill front (though the rings were pretty powerful) and I wondered;

a) Is Camping Gaz the way to go or is there something cheaper/better (don't mind replacing the regulator) ?

b) Is an alternative likely to make the grill work better - I suspect not but you never know ?

c) Is the alternative likely to be impaired anyway when new EU rules come in which equalise pressure from regulators at the current upper limit for Camping Gaz ?

Any opinions ?

a. As far as I know Calor is cheaper. The advantage of Camping Gaz is that it's easier to get replacements in France.

b. No. Camping stove grills are all rubbish.

c. No idea.

We carry two CampinGaz 907 cylinders, as they are the most cost effective of the CampiGaz cylinders.

We only go camping in France, so CampinGaz is the way to go, I did consider getting a Le-Cube cylinder this year whilst in France, as the Le Cube gas is very much cheaper than CampinGaz.

Problem is nothing can touch the CampinGaz 907 for it's compact size, and as we are mostly on EHU, I can get 20 weeks or more from a CampinGaz 904 cylinder.

Price in Carrefour this week for a 907 cylinder refill was 24€ I can live with that.

We use Calor 4.5kg butane (blue bottle). It’s loads cheaper. However we do keep a Gaz 904 handy for France just in case we ever did run out and we have one of these (see link) that screws into the Gaz 904 but allows to keep our Calor regulators. Never used it because we’ve never run out of Calor but you never know I guess.

If you only camp in summer in the UK then go for Calor 4.5 kg butane as pointed out. You need a regulator to go with. You can often find them on boot sales for a few quid to save paying full price for cylinder about £30 I think. After you have cylinder then refills are much cheaper for nearly twice the amount of gas.

We have two camping gas 905 cylinders but moved over to the calor gas 4.5kg because we found it was almost half the price of the camping gas 905 cylinders. I do agree though if you are going on the continent camping gas are better as they can be replaced whilst calor can't
