Hi All,

This is my first post here. I've scrolled through and can't find much on pegs, sorry if i am wrong and creating another thread....

Obviously the ground has been extremely hard this year. I have lost many pegs to the hard ground and am seeking a better and most likely more expensive alternative to what is provided in most tens when purchased.

Can people give me recommendations on a) pegs that are hammered into the ground or b) those that are drilled in.

Thanks in advance

I use Delta Ground Anchors for the guys. Although ‘only’ made out of nylon composite, they went into the dried out ground we’ve had this summer. No problems.
Halfords rock pegs are pretty cheap and are what I use for everything else. The plastic bits are a little fragile, but not too bad. Best to use a metal hammer (claw/lump etc..) with the rock pegs, Dead blow hammer for the Delta ground anchors.

I eventually got fed up with bent pegs (both plastic and the wire ones) and changed to rock pegs. I now use rock pegs on all guy ropes and pegging points. There are many different types of rock peg but basically they have a strong steel shaft with a flat head for hammering in with a lump hammer or a heavy claw hammer (which can also be used to extract the pegs).

I use these

Another vote for rock pegs pretty much all round in most ground - I might use decent wire pegs at the bottom of poles and for footprints if the ground is soft enough.

Delta pegs get rave reviews from their users, but I’ve never had a tent shift using rock pegs so I've never made the Delta plunge

The only time I wouldn’t use rock pegs for everything is in soft or sandy soil where I tend to use 8” plastic T-profile pegs (or even my very old 12” v-profile stakes).

Another vote for the rock pegs, cheap and cheerful and do the job well.
The only downside is the plastic caps break easily when trying to pull them out of very hard ground. I have a handful of penny washers in the bag to replace them with as they break.
I use the Halfords ones, £2.50 for 8. It's my 3rd summer using them and I've yet to bend one, or have one pulled out by the wind.

With regards to those pesky plastic bits that don't tend to last long, when using 8/9mm diameter rock pegs (aka Hard ground pegs), consider googling something called "Baz Washers", or take a trip to your local industrial roofing/fastener trade counter..

As seen on the right...

A perfect push fit onto the peg (No sliding down/falling off).
Big enough to stop the guyline unhooking from the peg.
Soft rubber to avoid chafing the guyline.

I've no idea why these peg manufacturers don't fit these as standard, as they work perfectly for me (and certainly better than the plastic hook things, even without the breakage problem!)

*Claw hammer will need to go under the peg head/above the washer, for extraction, and depending on the claw hammer, you may need to get a grinder on the slot, but that's because of the thick peg diameter, and not affected by the washer.

EDIT:
Just checked... That photo was added to my Photo library 5 years and 3 weeks ago. Let's say that's when I started using them.

I haven't lost one, broken one, dented one, or had any stolen! That's 2 boxes x 20 pegs!
Not one of the 40 have been replaced!
I occasionally use Delta Pegs for main guys, but these hard ground pegs get used somewhere, on virtually every camping trip. My trips are recorded below.
I doubt there's a plastic peg-top anywhere in the land that has lasted as well!

I have just changed over this year to using M8x150 coach screws with penny washers. Got fed up of the tug of war trying to get rock pegs out of the ground so now I just use a cordless drill to drill them in and out with minimal effort.

Previously was using Aldi rock pegs.

Rock pegs and Deltas will work almost anywhere, however the finned plastic ones (usually red) are better than rock pegs (smooth shank) in soft soil.

I use M8 hex head coach screws - 150mm and 200mm long - and blue tops which I bought years ago from the then owners of Moor View caravan park.
I drive them in either grass or hard standings with a club hammer, and remove them with electric drill. The screws I buy on line in packs of 100 - much cheaper than outlets like B&Q.
When I get the occasional bent one I simply discard it. In the years I've had the blue tops, not one has broken.   They were at one time advertised in the C.C. magazine, but I don't know if/where you could get them now.
Bertie.

You can get metal deltas Kuppenbender :)

We have about 20 of them, but they are very expensive...brilliant bit of kit though

...And again, they also do the Delta Rocks, which can be used in conjunction with their hook rock pegs, or their T Bar Rock pegs (as we have) or I presume, any of the numerous "other brand" rock pegs.
Having a selection of each of the Nylon, the steel, and the Rocks have allowed me to sleep soundly on numerous occasions.

Delta Rock Pegs...

Those Delta pegs sound a bit OTT on price. Not denying they do the job, but my arrangement over the years has been satisfactory and nowhere near as expensive.
The blue tops I refer to are great and I cannot understand (if true) why they are no longer on the market.

I have a stuff sack for pegs. I have delta ground anchors ( 4 metal and 12 nylon) and rock pegs for most other things, and a small number of finned plastic ones for crumbly soil. The Deltas are only used on the main corner guy ropes, they were never intended by their inventor to be used on every point on a tent.
