For anyone thinking of purchasing a sleeping bag for the winter and beyond I’d like to share my experiences.
Some years ago I was walking around a market when I spotted a Ex British army Arctic sleeping bag hanging up. Upon inspection it seemed in great condition in fact it looked as if it had never been used. That bag gave me great service for many years until I had a accident with it, ok stop laughing at the back it’s not what you think, l managed to spill 5 litres of oil over it, (don’t ask) and so I had to part company with a trusted friend.
Now what are the chances of getting not just one but two (the wife wanted one too) in the same condition. A trip to my nearest Army Surplus and I was soon leaving with two bags in pristine condition.
So for £50 each me and the wife have got two bags that will serve us well for many years.
I use them for camping but only if I have the car. For backpacking they are just too big and bulky.
I do find it funny seeing people using them inside out. The mesh pockets are meant to be inside. Originally for drying socks etc.

Hi Ewen.
Yeah you’re right, no good for backpacking.
I wanted to give more detail in my original post but didn’t want to make it to long. I wanted to get across that although Ex Army you can pick them up in great condition. No one wants a gungy bag.
I use the mesh pockets for my Maynards Wine gums. Lol.
Yeah. Mine was in A1 condition. They are probably the best budget choice for camping.

Yeah for the money you’d be hard pushed to find better.
You only have to slide the zip to know it’s a quality piece of kit.
Some of the zips on other bags are truly shocking.
I use mine from Autumn right through until the end of Spring.
I gather if you have them dry cleaned it gets rid of the crusty bits
Had you asked, I have a second hand, army green, 4 season carp bag for sale which looks just like an ex army bag minus the wine gum holders. Superb quick exit zips...absolutely essential if the tent is on fire! I would have been willing to let it go at a very respectable £50 (50% discount for UKCS members).
Hi Bob.
If only I’d known yesterday of your generous offer I would have given it the consideration it deserved. 😂
By the way no need to dry clean the Army bag in fact I wouldn’t recommend it. Just put in a machine wash and let it dry naturally.

Actually it is no longer for sale as I need to keep it now...see my thread on winter sleeping bags
Your bag has quick exit zips to catch carp. Our army bags have quick exit zips for staying alive.

The whole point of a sentry is to let the others sleep.
