Hi, I am new to the group so please be gentle, I have just bought a Daxara 197 trailer to tow behind my Ford Transit, the problem is the plug on the trailer is different to the socket on the van, after researching on the web it appears that the trailer has a standard 12N plug but the van has a 12S socket, I have attached photos, it appears that the 12S is normally for powering a caravan? I have opened the socket and have listed the connections:
Pin 1 - yellow
Pin 2 - blue
Pin 3 - white
Pin 4 - green
Pin 5 - brown
Pin 6 - red
Pin 7 - black

These appear to be the correct connections for a trailer board?

So, my question is, can I simply buy a 12S grey plug and rewire the trailer lights into it?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

no, you need to get it rewired on the van correctly, this is best as who knows in future what you might tow and at least then it will work be that with a convertor for the newer type sockets

Hi Dantis, and welcome to the forum. You would be much better to replace the socket on the van with a 12N - that way, your van will be able to tow any trailer with a 7 pin plug, and likewise, anyone else's car with the standard 12N socket will be able to tow your trailer, should the need arise.

You should of course test the van to make sure that each wire does what it's supposed to for lighting and not something else because it may be wired to power something other than trailer lights even though they seem the correct colours for lights.

Seems somewhat strange that a vehicle would have a 12S socket but not a 12N. The 12S socket isn't intended for running lights, just caravan internal stuff. Maybe whoever wired the van just used any socket they could get hold of rather than the correct one?

As others have said, it makes more sense to get the van wired to the normal standard. You can then tow whatever you like with it.

Best Regards,
Colin

If the van has only a 12s socket then possibly 12n will have been removed for some reason. If the 12s is wired correctly as a 12s on your van then it will be wired to run caravan fridge & charge battery not operate the road lights on trailer so you will have to fit a correctly wired 12n socket to your van. 12n & 12s sockets are fitted together for caravan use. There is no reason for having just a 12s socket.

If for some odd reason the previous owner had wired the 12s socket for trailer lights then a better idea would be to fit correct 12n socket to van as pointed out.

If you have a volt meter then you can see how van socket is wired by checking terminals with lights & indicators on to see if power is there. If it is indeed wired for lights then just fit a correct 12n socket in its place otherwise you will have to wire a new 12n socket into van.

You can google for 12s & 12n wiring diagrams.
