Just thinking about a roof box to fit camping stuff in. But our car doesn't have a roof rack (it's a Honda CRV) do you need one to have a box?

Yep, you just need the roof bars and foot pack for the Honda, so that you can mount the roof box.

You'll need roof bars to fit a box. Take a look here. They offer a discount to UKCS members and (in my experience) are brilliantly hepful if you're not sure what you need.

Agreed. Roofbox.co.uk are very good & will tell you what you need to fit your vehicle.

Check your car's handbook to find out what the maximum roof loading is (often 100kg) and don't forget to allow for the weight of the box & roof bars in that.

Put lightweight stuff in the box & keep the heavy stuff low down in the middle of the car.

Get a decent size one too - You will be surprised how little stuff you will actually fit in one and still be able to close the lid!

FYI
We have roof bars from Halfords and you buy the 'feet' to fit each car. It means if you change your car (or even company car) you can just buy a new pair of 'feet'.

I think we still have Astra and Focus feet but not the cars . We generally use a trailer for camping holidays now.

We bought our roof box & bars from Here. We find that if you put items that can be compacted down, sleeping bags, clothing e.t.c. that works best. Just make sure you don't go over the stated weight allowance.

I have had a couple of roofboxes from roofbox.co.uk and the stuff and service has been great. When we had tents, our roofbox was invaluable (particularly good for putting wet stuff in when striking camp).

As others have said, you will need to get bars and feet as well as a roofbox. We have thule aero bars (with thule feet) and a kamei box. The aero bars are more expensive, but are quieter that "square" bars in our experience. Both our roofboxes have been Kamei and the quality of them is fantastic. Really assured locking mechanisms and quality ABS.

Again, I would recommend buying a bigger box than you think you need but be careful not to put too much weight up on the roof.

You need bars, a foot pack AND a fitting kit unless your CRV has roof bars fitted.

Gumtree or eBay are excellent sources for second hand kit (and good to sell on kit when you change your car). Gumtree is free to use which is even better and the search facility is great. Also set up an alert and they will tell you as soon as what you are after is advertised. You can filter it down to a radius sou are prepared to travel.
I got all my Thule stuff over the years without paying big prices. Always plenty roof boxes as well as bars etc.

Also worth bearing in mind is that you have to declare the roof box when using ferries and it will cost you something like fifty quid on top of the normal price - it did with Brittany Ferries as it put my Rav4 into the higher price bracket which you would normally pay for a van.

Depends on your car though. Focus estate + box still fell into car category.

ahh, a CRV is an SUV. Probably cost you extra then.

That is correct however just to add that if you are towing a caravan and the overall height of the roof box on the vehicle is lower than the height of the caravan there should be no charge.

I changed car last year and have to buy feet as there are no rails for my existing bars. That, coupled to the fact my roofbox is a small one, means we have decided to rent box, bars and feet for our next long camping holiday by car.
