We are needing extra space for camping gear, but don't want a trailer. The usual thing is a roof box, but we found a Thule Back Box at Halfords. It fits at the back of the car like a bike rack, but you put a hard lockable box there in stead.
Has anyone got one of these and can recommend it? It's quite expensive so we don't want to get one if people say they're more bother than a regular (and cheaper) roof box.
Sorry, can't help with a recommendation but I would have thought that the first place to start is the car handbook to see what weights each position can take.
Too much weight over the rear axle and you will lose traction on the front wheels.
I would have thought that a roofbox would have spread the load better.

We once used a Thule rear rack but unable to afford their box we used one of those boxes you store garden stuff in and strapped it on with ratchet straps and it worked fine, the only thing was it wasn't waterproof and got in the way of opening the rear hatch and of course you have to be careful of what weight you put in it but those things apart it worked just fine and we still have the rack for occasional use.
We used the Thule Backup box back in 2009 with the VW Golf, but sold the box as soon as we got back from our three week trip to France.
And bought a 750kg trailer.
At the moment we are using a Kamie Husk XXL Roof box, no trailer but are using a Ford Kuga, which is basically a van in the form of a car.
Personally I would either go for the Kamie Husky XXL 510lt another choice would be the Farad F3 at 680lt, although the Farad weighs 22kg which could be an issue for some.
certainly interesting but a comment on another video says that the BakRak/Box Rak fitting instructions are abysmal and that you should buy from a more professional company. Not having seen either for quality or ease of fitting, I think we will probably go with the Thule as it's a well-known and long lastingbrand.
Doesn't look like rocket science. Do you have link to video? We were looking to get a 2nd hand Thule set up but thinking BacRak system looks more versatile & great in stainless steel. Had no issue with Thule roof box or bars but bike carrier isn't without issues. Now we have solar on our van & mostly off-grid I don't want to use roof box.
Well I have the rack and fitting, is torquing up a single bolt, coudn't be any simplier.
I bought a water proof plastic trunk from B and Q and strap it on with a couple of tie downs.
I have a bak-rak and whilst the instructions aren’t a glossy brochure like you might get from Thule they are concise, British made and well supported on the phone.
