Hi all.

I am in desperate need of some advice and short reviews if possible on backpack/rucksack chairs (or alternatives)

Ok so here is the back story-
My father has worked in heavy engineering all his life and is now retired, he loves the outdoors and used to be super fit, he rode a motorcycle for 45+ years but alas he now is unable to, unfortunately, he has suffered 2 heart attacks through diabetes, he has thrombosis, and has now been diagnosed with Charcot foot (a weakening of the bones) and cannot walk for long distances.

So, I'm looking for a comfortable to carry and sit on 'device' that can be taken onto a bus and is easy to use.

Any help you can give me is highly appreciated as I have been out of the camping game for20 odd years after hurting my back.

Would be more faffing around, but one of the newer style Light weight chairs (which weigh less than 1kg) paired with a half decent 22 litre backpack could be over 1kg lighter and a lot more comfortable than one of those chair/rucksack combos.

That is the problem, 'the faffing around' he needs to be able to fold out and sit down quickly, Thank you for the input, I will take a look at a couple of easy up chairs but I cant see many being as compact as the one you showed me.

I do. They're bulky, heavy, uncomfortable. And that's when they're empty!

Yes, I've used a slightly different version of the one in my second link, Gelert branded but I think may have been discontinued, for a number of years. Must admit that its steel frame does mean it can feel fairly heavy but it's easy to convert to a stable seat.

Re the Tripod stool- I have used a couple of the tripod stools and both of them had a tendency to make certain things go all numb then extremely uncomfortable when walking again.

Re the backpack stool- Those cross braces at the top and bottom of the stool look a little uncomfortable to be fair.

I thought about one of these but they only take about 15-20% of the weight off your feet and I would suggest they get a tad uncomfortable after a while.

I have, the top chairs that keep coming back are those weird flimsy-looking chairs that look like they have a built-in tip over mechanism in the middle :)

Those are the ones, that bit in the middle scares me, the bit that looks like a pivot point just looks so flimsy, I'm wondering now how they go together now and how quickly.

I have the original of those light weight chairs. It is a helinox chair one. It is very well made, light and compact enough to carry in a small rucksack. It goes together very easily and I would recommend them but Im not sure that they are what you are looking for.

The process is, 1 take out of the bag. 2 Open the material on the floor. 3 connect the shock corded pole sections together. 4 insert the four pole ends into their fabric cups. 5 turn chair over.

Whilst this is quite easy it is not an instant fold out chair for when you need a rest all of a sudden.

I’ve seen those rucksack/ stool chairs in Decathlon. Their products are usually well made and reasonably priced. If what you are looking for is an easy perch for a short break before getting going again I would have thought they are suitable.

I’m about 14 stone (90kg), and I have no problem sitting on them. I have a couple like the ones in the link I sent, but from Aldi, and the
Robens Observer which I have safely fallen asleep on.

In a rough and ready, unscientific test it took me 43 seconds to pop one together. There’s no danger of getting the poles in the wrong holes, as they are attached with elastic cord.

Well, it seems that these chairs come highly recommended, I wanted to surprise my dad with a solution but I am not sure if it is going to be possible knowing his needs, I guess I am just going to have to take him shopping and see how he gets on.

I would really like to extend my thanks to all of you that have contributed, you have given me some options that may help him.
