Where can I buy a standard hook-up extension cable in France? I’m staying near Moutiers in the Alps, local decathlon doesn’t seem to sell them and I can’t seem to find any local camping/caravan shops...

My UK-socket cable (see link) seems to have blown after we plugged a kettle into it. The french-plug fridge we hired from campsite was connected too.

Thank you, Any help really appreciated!!

Sorry to ask a basic question - have you checked it's not just the RCD that's tripped?

Spiritburner I reset the RCD and it’s made no difference, there was a slight burning smell when it happened!

Thanks SGThomas, might be a(nother) driving day today! Strange that there are so few camping shops around.

Amazon looks like a Monday delivery at the soonest Mummymills, will have to weigh up the options...

Best of luck, hope you get it sorted. Whilst camping round Europe 2 years ago our EHU was stolen (car broken into). We fortunately were able to hire one at most sites we went to.

The MCB is rated at 16Amp which is 4kW but the spec says maximum load is 2kW which is only 8 amps. Kettle and fridge is probably over 8 Amps unless it's a low wattage kettle.

Can you take the screws out of the back of the unit and have a look at the connections etc. A connection may have been poorly made and you may be able to re-connect it properly.

Thanks everyone for the advice, managed to get it sorted with a visit to Weldom DIY store, bought a standard European extension cable and connector. Navver I’ll try your tip when we get home, thankfully we have power now! Not going to risk connecting the kettle. Would it be foolish to try recharging devices with an adapter?

Wow Richp123, glad you got sorted, plenty of folk use none protected extensions as EHU’s not ideal but better than nothing I guess.

I could not get your link to work, but looking at the GO website I am guessing your EHU is the model on a reel with build in RCD MCD, hard to tell from the image, but these 16amp units sometimes only have 16amp (2.5mm) cable and the MCB itself is often just 10amp, but can be easily changed.

I never did like the idea of the Reel type EHU, did you do a test with the unit before you set off.

Have a look at my “EHU Modification” post in case you are thinking of repairing or changing your EHU, when you return.
Also one of my other posts “EHU Amp Monitor” could also be of interest.

Enjoy your holiday in the Alps, and keep safe.

Thanks Francais, it’s not the reel type but a kind of 3-socket extension lead, perhaps this link will work:

https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15908481/hi-gear-3-way-mobile-mains-kit-15m-cable-15908481

I didn’t check it before I left, a lesson for next time!

Did you have any thoughts on whether using the piggyback 3-socket adapter to recharge phones etc, and if that would blow it again. Not much of a bright spark when it comes to electricity I’m afraid! Thanks in advance

Yep phone charging will not be an issue, but probably best to use the French style extention cable that you bought from Weldon DIY.

As it appears you may have a faulty EHU.

Always best to try this stuff at home before you set off, the Commando type socket to UK 13amp plug are easy to get hold of, and also lets you use the EHU at home if required.

If you can wire up a plug, you can make your own UK 13amp Plug to Commando style socket adapter for around a fiver.
