I am GCSE design and technology student from Suffolk, i am looking into equipment for drying your clothes. i was looking for campers or caravaners to tell me requirements you look for when buying a drying rack for your clothes when on a camping trip/holiday, for example portable and lightweight? things that i would need to consider before making this product?

Thank You

Hi Alastair. Be aware some sites do not allow clothes lines or free standing clothes drying kit but many of these will have an on-site laundrette with washers and driers.

We have a clothes rack which hooks on to an open window. It is about 120cm deep and 70cm wide with a series of bars going across to hang clothes. It folds flat when not in use which is useful.

Sometimes we hang things in the shower such as wet coats or towels etc.

I agree about clothes lines but have never found a site that doesn’t allow rotary airers.

and even if they did, they aren't overly big that you couldn't put them in your awning overnight or when going out

No need. The MH has a pull-out 6-rope rack in the washroom, like over a hotel bath, that hooks onto the opposite wall. Dries the shower towels etc nicely. If the heating's on, we have warm towels for the next shower.
As a design project, I can't see much scope for anything new. Every weekend paper has those wee magazines with such gadgets & inventions, never mind the exhibitors at the shows, Aldi, Watt Bros etc.
But good luck anyway.

We struggle to fit a rotary dryer in the car and so would love to find some sort of retractable washing line that could be adjusted the the length that you needed, perhaps with a combination of different fixings, e.g. suction cups to mount on a caravan or car, and a hook to attach to a pole on the tent. Optional stakes to stick in the ground as washing line poles may be a good idea. Then I could use the kit with my weekend pop up tent, my big 6 berth tent, and my caravan. Good luck with your D&T project - I'm head of KS4 at a school so I know how important it is to you :-)

A couple of king poles and a few metres of line (doubled where necessary to avoid cutting) pegged out at the corners of a >-< configuration - compact and light to carry and easy to set up and take down.

There was a trend some time ago for creating wooden formers which hooked over the caravan handles, with washing line in between, for drying towels etc. I’ve made a version, from an upturned tool hook, a wooden dowel, and a section from a radiator dryer. This fits on one of the (horizontal) handles, and works for our daily wash/swim kit.

Good luck with your project - there’s room for some innovation in this area beyond the two poles and a bit of string! Please let us know how you get on with the project, including final photos; after exams will do. We’re all stakeholders now.

My daughter (who is also doing GCSE Design and Technology) said 'they only have one post. Why have they not come back and said thank you'. Out of the mouths of babes.

If she needs help with camping questions I have asked her to ask all you friendly people (and hope she'll remember her manners!!)
