We have a couple of the Outwell 400XL-R lanterns, the “R” stands for Remote Control not rechargeable , although there is I believe a rechargeable model available.
I would not say that the Glow is particularly harsh from the single 400 lumen LED, but if it was I would make a diffuser cover from some coloured cellophane.
We run each lantern with six rechargeable LR20 batteries from ALDI/Lidl, run time is excellent.
Having said that we mostly use a 240v Halogen Bulb bulkhead 105watt (1,900 lumens) lamp, with a dimmer, which at 2,700K gives a lovely warm honey glow, not far of what my old Vapalux paraffin pressure lantern does, although the Vapalux sees little use these days.
