Hi All

As per the title, Im looking to buy some lighting for inside our tent which is safe to use with young children but which gives off a genuinely warm golden light. So many LED lights give you a cool white 3000k plus light which I find cold and unappealing. Can anyone recommend a lantern/lighting that fits the bill please?

Thank you

We have a couple of the Outwell 400XL-R lanterns, the “R” stands for Remote Control not rechargeable , although there is I believe a rechargeable model available.

I would not say that the Glow is particularly harsh from the single 400 lumen LED, but if it was I would make a diffuser cover from some coloured cellophane.

We run each lantern with six rechargeable LR20 batteries from ALDI/Lidl, run time is excellent.

Having said that we mostly use a 240v Halogen Bulb bulkhead 105watt (1,900 lumens) lamp, with a dimmer, which at 2,700K gives a lovely warm honey glow, not far of what my old Vapalux paraffin pressure lantern does, although the Vapalux sees little use these days.

Just noticed that the post edit function has gone, just wanted to add that the Outwell 400LX-R is now EOL should have guessed that as we bought ours back in 2009.

The current version from Outwell is Carnelian 1000 there are less bright models in the range, but as the 1000 has a dimmer, it is probably the best choice also has a spec off 2700K so not to harsh a Glow.

The red light is more of a night light with 15 lumens, the other two settings are 60 & 200 lumens of acceptable white light.
But it is compact and USB rechargeable.

This is exactly what you are looking for:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00XUJCNJE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?........

I have two of them. Cold white, neutral/daylight white and warm white. Dimmable too.

Also got one of these, expensive but same light options as above, only a lot brighter and with rotary dimming:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/LiteXpress-71-Camping-Complies-Standard/dp/B00XYBO2YM/ref........

That second one is incredibly good, but two of the first ones is the slightly better and more flexible option.

Been through this with the caravan - make sure to select a colour temperature of 2700k to achieve a similar look to the old filament lamps. Avoid 'cool white', and definitely not 'daylight' which requires sunglasses...

Don't overdo the wattage either - most times 3w or 5w is enough

In contrast to other posts, I found that warm white (around 2800k) was too 'mellow' - almost soporific, to use inside my van so I switched to cool white 6500k. However, my children have grown and flown and I can understand that a warm white might be much better for young children.
