Apologies for these really basic questions but we are complete camp newbies.
We have bought a new Cadac Carri Chef 2 but have no idea re how to supply it with gas etc. We have no existing gas cyclinder or any other kit to make it work. So I would be super grateful if anyone can take pity and answer the below questions:
1) I think we will go with Butane. What size gas tank do people tend to take for a 2 week holiday (using it for evening meals)?
2) Assuming most gas suppliers do bottle/tank exchanges how do people start off? Is it a case of finding an old empty bottle on ebay and then exchanging that?
3) We have a Cadac Carri Chef 2 which I believe is HP? What regulator should we buy for it?
4) Can you buy regulators which tell you how much gas is left in the bottle and are they reliable and a good idea?
Thanks so much for any help, its really really appreciated
My response to your questions is:
1) 4.5kg Butane should be OK for your requirements.
2) Look out for a cylinder (ebay etc)it saves paying out a deposit. Ensure that you buy the brand of bottle that you will be using. Calor is available UK wide so you can exchange it wherever you run out.
3)Regulator depends upon which cylinder size you purchase.Clipon or screw type.
4)You can get gauges but I don't believe they are reliable in indicating how much gas is left. Easiest way is to shake the bottle or if you have suitable means you can weigh the cylinder.
I would suggest that you go to a reputable camping shop and they will help you.
if its a HP model then it doesnt have or need a regulator. it uses disposable gas cannisters which attach directly to the cadac with no gas hose or regulator.
This device will run off a variety of gas sources.
If you only want to cook in warm weather butane is ok, but if you want to camp in the spring when the mornings are cooler then get propane.
Campingaz 907 cylinders are smaller than Calor gas cylinders so easier to transport but more expensive (per kg of fuel) to refill.
Empty cylinders can be picked up for between £5 and £10 on Ebay, don't worry if you buy a dirty rusty bottle you are going to take it in and exchange it. Buy locally you'll have to go in and collect yourself. Choose the smallest Calor gas cylinder it will last you a few years.
Take your cooker and empty gas bottle into your local camping shop, look helpless and get the experienced staff to select and fit the hose and regulator for you (for free) if they can't do that you are in the wrong shop.
One person is correct, if your model is a HP then it has an internal regulator, you supply it with HP gas, which is gas straight from a container with no regulator?
There is also a version of the safari chef that is HP.
A canister screws directly to it. You will get quite a lot of use from a small canister as they do not use that much gas, so a 4.5kg bottle might last you a year.
I have a 13kg I use at home and I have this 10 years or more on the cadac.
Camping gaz maybe your best option? you dont need a huge cylinder.
