Hi,
After such very warm/hot vacation times in recent years, last year's especially, we have been thinking of getting air conditioning for our caravan. We were choosing between the roof mounted ones or the under-bed ones available from such as Truma.
However we have recently bought a portable [castors] unit for our home (I am always too flippin' hot) and wondered about buying another, smaller, one which we could use at home then take in the caravan.
Any of you doing that = taking a portable home air conditioning unit in your caravan?
We're not impressed with 'coolers' and are thinking more of a compression, gas->gas unit.
Small would be good (though there don't seem to be many available) and low enough wattage for a campsite.
I've often seen it suggested that mobile domestic units are unsuitable for caravans, but apart from the obvious of size, power consumption and having to stick a hose out of the window, I can't see why!
The movement in transit may mean that it would need a while for the refrigerant to settle before use, as is advised when first acquiring a AC unit, but that shouldn't be much of a problem. The ride in a caravan can be pretty bumpy, so that may not be good for it, but I doubt that it's much worse than many delivery trucks.
For the last two years we have used this in the South of France. I know it's not an air con unit but a cooler, but we did find it pretty effective in the van and also use it in the house with great effect.
When we came back from France last year we decided to have this installed, and it is like night and day and wished we had bought one years ago. It is also a heater so can give you a blast of hot air while the van heating kicks in.
I was advised against getting the under bench air con unit because of having to run the ducting to the back of the van and by the time the cold air gets there it's not cold. It is also a great deal of hassle to run the ducting.
I should also point out that the roof mounted one can be transferred from van to van, it only needs a 400x400 roof light.

How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

Our caravan is stored in France so having a proper unit installed at the moment isn't an option for us - is the one you've used for the last couple of years worth bothering with - or not? Presumably you need to hang a hose through a window?
No hose through the window as it's a cooler, not air con.
In what I would call a normal summer in France, then yes as it means you can get a good nights sleep with it running.
If it is a stupidly hot summer(last year)then obviously it is less effective, but still fairly worth while at night.
Before bed we used to put ice in the water fill area and that helped.
