Agreed. Having a hot water bottle made a massive difference last time I went camping. That and Hot Hands, those little heat pouches that are activated by exposure to air - I found they stayed hot all night, which was a godsend after my hot water bottle cooled down. I had lots of them stuffed inside my clothes 😄
Space blanket underneath the air bed, fleece blanket over the top, then I use a coleman double 4 season sleeping bag and take an additional fleece blanket for extra cold nights. And, as someone said above, a hot water bottle. Hot drinks can help too.
If you sleep on a blow up bed the cold from the ground means you are basically sleeping on a bag if freezing cold air.
A SIM has far more insulation from the ground as it had a layer of foam.
A space blanket helps a bit with reflecting your body warmth, but using interlocking foam tile matting (kids play mats or else workshop matting) on the floor of the tent will insulate from the ground. Even yoga mats would be good.
The problem with SIMS is that i have a bad back, and sleeping on a surface that's too firm causes me pain and stiffness. I'm a side sleeper and quite curvy, which doesn't help. I tend to have my inflatable mattress a little deflated so that I sink into it. I'm not sure I could get the same level of comfort from a SIM.
I have lots of kids' play mats but I don't think I'd be able to fit enough in the car. We're planning on getting a roof box though, so that might make it work. Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking picnic blankets under the air mattresses might help too.
You wouldn’t need to go to the expense of a SIM on top of an air mattress, as you already have the air bit. A roll out foam mat or yoga mat on top of your mattress would give you an insulating layer and stop your body heat disappearing into the cold air of the blow up bed.
