might be a daft question but can you run tyres on a trailer at different pressures? I've replaced a tyre which states max 40psi but the other one has a max pressure of 50psi? Would I be ok to under inflate the 50psi one to match the new tyre?
Surely those are just the maximum pressures the tyres are designed to take? They are not necessarily the recommended pressures for the trailer. The manufacturer's recommended pressure for our caravan's tyres is 36psi, but my tyres are marked as max 60psi, if I remember right.
Yeah, thats right.. the thing that has confused me is that the recommended psi for my Erde 143 trailer is 50psi, so just wondered if 40psi would still be ok?
I am no tyre expert, but I think I would rather run with both tyres inflated to 40psi than chance running a 40psi rated tyre at 50psi.
Running a car with under-inflated tyres can lead to handling problems and accelerated wear, but this wouldn't be the same on a trailer. Trailer tyres tend to perish before they wear out anyway.
We had a Maypole 650KG trailer before buying the caravan, it was running on 10 inch wheels when we got it (although we upgraded to 13” wheels) the recommended pressures for the 10” was 40psi if I remember correctly, I certainly wouldn’t be running it with different pressures on each wheel
I’m going to guess the reason for the different pressure ratings is because whilst both tyres are the same size they will have different weight loadings.
If you look at the numbers listed after the tyre size I think you will see they are different.
Whilst it’s probably ok to use different ratings it not ideal.
And I would certainly recommend you lower the tyre pressure from the max and not raise it over.
Hope that makes sense!🤔
Thats exactly what I thought but the load rating on both is the same! Rather than risk it ive bought another new one to match to avoid any potential problems!
