I'm looking for a decent torch, flashlight, whichever you prefer, recharged by hand cranking. And I'm looking for something we can buy without using Amazon, which we've boycotted for years now, but which seems to have a monopoly on them.

Something more than a little key-ring job, less than a major installation, just comfortable to carry in the hand.
So far I'm drawing a surprising blank.

Any recommendations would be welcome, please.

Thanks

These seem prettty widely available. No idea how good they are. Other stockists than Mountain Equipment are available.

These look useful indeed. Thank you. Not sure why I hadn't thought of Ebay, I was looking in camping shops and failing!

Thanks again.

Just wondering why you would really want one of these. I have one but find it does not begin to compete with an old lamp I bought to use on top of a video camera. An led lamp using 4 AA batteries and runs for hours giving far superior light to wind-up type.
Just a personal opinion, of course.
I am even planning to make a mounting so that I can fit it to my bicycle for night cycling.

You're right, of course, many wind-up torches aren't a patch on many battery powered ones. We've had some very disappointing failed glow-worms of poor things in the past. But I'm keen to use less batteries, and also reduce the risk of their running out at a vital moment, and keep hoping that with technology moving on a better wind-up torch will appear!

I would suggest getting a rechargeable Lithium ion battery torch with a powerful led bulb.
The battery can be recharged (like a phone) from any USB source ie from the mains, from the car or from a USB solar panel.

In the 3rd world children are doing their homework using solar powered lighting, I use solar powered fairy light around my tent so I can find it at night.

I do own a clockwork torch but have never actually taken in camping. It can't hold a charge for more that few seconds making it impractical.

If I were to buy a new wind up torch I'd want it combined with a radio and would want a USB outlet so I could recharge my phone etc from the hand-crank.I'd keep it in a forgotten compartment in the car (or if I had a bomb shelter).

I had a wind up lantern. It was more of a novelty really. We would sit outside on our pitch at
night & think it was quite good. Just like my Campingaz lamp. It is nice because it is real fire.
It just that a current led lantern or torch is a lot more convenient & works much better.

I got my son a wind up torch. You can charge your phone off it through usb and then use the torch app on your phone lol...
seriously not a wind up.
Personally i cant be doing with it. I got a usb rechargeable lantern and the beam on it is amazing . cost me about £18 but it was from Amazon. Probably available on ebay.
