Hi, Does anyone know of an insurance company that will insure awnings?

Take a look at Shield.
We have cover with them, for our tent and awnings.

They also do caravans, motorhomes, trailer tents etc, so they may cover caravan awnings only?

They appear to give us the cover we need/require, at a premium we are prepared to pay, (not necessarily cheap?) although I hasten to add we've never had need to make a claim, which of course is the best way to find out just how good they are... or not!

Some folk claim to have sufficient cover through their existing household insurance, but when we looked into that option, our insurer couldn't offer us anywhere near the protection/cover wanted, hence us going for the specific "Camping insurance".

Doesn't most caravan insurance cover awnings? I don't quite understand why you want to cover the awning separately.

If it is an old caravan then as Colin says your solution is probably to insure the caravan & include cover for the awning. If caravan is too old to be worth insuring ie 1990s or older then ime cost to insure is well under £100,

It's still worth insuring an older caravan in my opinion. For one thing I once had an old caravan stolen (probably for aluminium scrap), and for another thing the insurance covers you for 3rd party risks. Suppose you have an old caravan, mine's 1992, and it catches fire next to a £200,000 motorhome? Without insurance it doesn't bear thinking about. My insurance, including cover for the awning, personal effects etc cost me less than £80. Money well spent in my view.

Good point that, Colin. One i personally hadn't thought of. Though why you wouldn't insure anything you have valuables in, i dont know. Or why would you have an awning worth more than the van it was nailed to, requiring insuring?

To set your mind at rest Colin. If your caravan caught fire through no malicious act by yourself ie your did not deliberately commit arson then you would not be liable. Third party insurers or property owners could not come after you for their losses.

Just to add to the above they may try to involve you but if you have insurance they will defend your claim. If you are not insured you would have to deal with any correspondence on your own or take legal advice which is very stressful. If it was your motor home would you just give up and accept it wasn’t the neighbouring vehicle fault? Some would but most wouldn’t. Also if you have an old van that isn’t serviced etc could it be your fault legally who knows so having insurance is peace of mind in my opinion. Insurance does more than just cover your possessions. At the end of the day it is down to individual choice. Sorry just offering a different insight not wanting to start an insurance argument.

Hi Sue. Not starting an argument but I am afraid nothing your is post is correct.

If it was your motor home then your insurance would handle it all. You would have no involvement with the caravan owner.

As I pointed out liability has to be proved If owner will not admit it. Ownership alone does not prove liability. If a caravan burns then afterwards there is very little left. There would be no possibility of proving liability.

A condition of any caravan insurance is that caravan must be serviced either every year or with some insurance at least every 2 years. Even if the burnt caravan was insured the insurer will not entertain third party claims unless liability can be proved.

I don’t agree that my post was incorrect just pointing out what could happen. Do you work in the insurance industry? Cos I do and you will be amazed at what lengths people will go to to blame others. Just pointing out that an insurance policy can help to defend a claim for you as well as protect your possessions. So please don’t accuse me of being incorrect. I will not post on this thread again.
