We finally bit the bullet and unfortunately had to sell our camper van. So heading back to canvas for our trips. I suffer with a bad back and prefer a soft mattress. Does anyone have some good recommendations for really comfortable camping mattresses. Most trips aren't a problem, boot/roof box to tent. But once a year we head to the Scillies so we have take everything with us as no cars are allowed.
I dont think there is a s.i.m made to cover both types of camping. I too suffer with back problems but always have a decent nights sleep on my 7.5cm Vango comfort. Ive heard good things about outwell dreamcatcher also. The downside to these is the room they take up when packed--might not be a problem if car-camping but I wouldnt fancy lugging one round the Scilly isles on my back!
A while ago -I bought a pair of cheap and cheerful sim,s from Lidl during their camping promotion special buys--Aldi do similar promotions occasionally. They were fine for the money but only comfortable for 1 or 2 nights at the most. They rolled up small enough to strap below a rucksack.
I would ask in the lightweight campers section about the gear they use--expensive but practical for "yomping" around the Scillies. Rumour has it that some of those trekker types even use tents!!
Thank you. We don't travel round the Scillies once we hit the island we camp on. So it's more to do with allowed space on the ferry. Gear goes from car, to shipping container, then it's out of our hands until the tractor dumps it on the camp site.
We have the Vango Comfort 5 Sim on top of a fold out campbed and its really good. I've thought about getting a bigger sim but they do take up a lot of space and after watching a mate wrestle with the vango 15cm sim it put me off. The 5cm Comfort is good enough, I sleep like a log camping on it.

Good pointer Caligula--had a look and very impressed with the pack size for a 50mm sim. Good time to buy as well--sale time!
