Hi, new on here so let me know if this isn’t right place/type of post I should be doing but if anyone has any advice on equipment that is essential or useful for camping in UK in July with 2 kids please that would be great. I’m currently looking for some cheap sleeping bags and mats/blow up mattresses for them both (one is 18mths and the other is 4). Although our youngest we may try to squeeze into a travel cot still if he hasn’t grown too much in the next two months! We have a travel potty, but not much else in terms of stuff for kids.

Any tips on kids sleeping bag makes/types or where to get cheap ones/used ones would be great.

Thanks!

As you cant guarantee the weather (to be 'warm'), the sleeping bags need to be good ones. You can always open it up if its too warm, but you cant get warmer if its cold. Tents are nothing like bedrooms, as im sure you appreciate, and being cold through the night wrecks the experience. I would have any other 'child essentials' would come from your home. Your biggest task is keeping them entertained, and not too noisy on an evening. Tents are wafer thin, and 'neighbours' can hear a gnats fart at fifty paces from within!

Do you have a foam interlocking play mat at home? If so, take it. It will insulate the ground in the sleeping pod and give them a softer floor.

Socks and a hat in bed if it is nippy. Fleece blankets.

Take wellies for the wet grass in the mornings.

At night zip the zips of the fleeing pod to the highest point so that the 4 year old can’t set off exploring while you are still zonked out.

Have bags of brioche rolls etc as instantly available early breakfast. Personally I always avoided cereal because of spilt milk.

Don’t give them bubbles to play with. Bubbles affect the waterproofing on tents and everyone will hate you.

Most kids love camping - have a great time!

Deborah - great advice, thanks! We've also just started our camping adventure with 2 children and the foam mats are a good tip, along with avoiding bubbles!

Hi,
Like the first person I would recommend getting decent sleeping bags, We have a sleeping POD for our little one, and we take extra blankets to go over. We also have some cheap ski base layers from Aldi for him, to put under his PJs, plus some fluffy socks!
Being cold on a night is a miserable going on, and makes everyone cranky the next day. We use the play foam mat squares underneath the air bed as well.
Good luck and Enjoy!

Also please be aware that once you turn on a light in your tent after Dark, it has the effect of providing a Shadow Show for everyone around you, and they can see and Hear just about every move you make, it can be hilarious at times!

If your children need a night light to be left on, then use a low level battery operated Tea light, which should just about give you enough light to see without much of a shadow problem.

Before going to bed at night, please ensure that no Gas appliances have been left on, and if possible turn the Gas bottle off using the screw valve on the top of it. Always try and Cook outside your of your tent, and never BBQ inside one, or leave a used one inside to cool down after use. They are still capable of giving off toxic fumes for many hours after the flames appear to have totally died down, and it’s just not worth the risk.

Take a selection of Peg types, including a few Rock pegs designed for use in very hard ground, and a Decent Mallet, plus a. Peg puller tool for removing them all when you leave.

I hope it all goes well for you and that the weather is Dry and Kind, often extra kit can be found for sale at Car boot sales, and most leading supermarket stores hold a Summer Camping and Outdoor leisure event selling gear at fairly cheap prices, including the Aldi and Lidl. Stores. A large rinsed out 3 litres Orange Squash container makes a free handy water bottle to keep inside the tent to cut down on the amount of time you have to walk to the Tap to fill the kettle, especially if it’s raining or during the night!

A travel cot can be useful for being able to keep children in one place but they do take up a lot of space. The zip up pop up cots are good because they trap the warm air inside.

We always take croc style shoes as well as wellies because they are easy for children to take off when they come into the tent so they don't bring in mud /water.

Waterproof trousers / lots of spare trousers are really useful as children have a tendency to trip over on the wet grass!

Lots of layers for keeping warm.

Duplo / lego in a bag is always a winner.
