I don’t know about its burning qualities but personally I’d stick to purple because it’s not going to be confused with anything else, be that white spirit or drinking water, if the label comes off.
Pyridine gives it the odour, the dye is just to make it recognizable as unfit to drink.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
I've been using the clear bio-ethanol in stoves for years now. Doesn't have the smell & burns hotter & cleaner. I find it cheaper than the denatured purple meths.
I've enough faith in my common sense to be able to do so safely.

I usually stock up on alcool a brulee in France. If you put it in a fuel bottle how are you going to confuse it with anything else?
I always did the same. But my stock has run out and it doesn't look like I'll be returning to france, 😞

Aye - the French stuff is pretty good too but smells like fermenting swamp water. I normally bring back 2 x 5 litres when we go but with surgeries & covid it's been 3 years. As well as backpacking I use a lot in the workshop so go through a lot.
I too have used the purple stuff in stoves - for decades, & it's perfectly adequate. But now there is a better alternative regarding purity, output & economy I use that.
So you can have an adequate fuel that's hard to confuse with water, gin or vodka or a better fuel that requires a minimum of common sense not to poison yourself or anyone else.

Thanks. Is there any particular brand you recommend or is it all pretty much the same.
I recently noticed a bottle of Parma violet gin in a supermarket, which bore more than a passing resemblance to meths, so the purple colour is not a foolproof indication. I'd hate to get mixed up and waste gin 😆
I use b&q Hacienda brand they sell for ethanol fires. It's often reduced.
I find the bioethanol pretty consistent unlike the purple stuff. Varying levels of water content which affects output (cue the folk saying you should put 10% water in to prevent sooting. I never bothered & not necessary with the clear stuff)
