I love to read in bed, and would like to find something to help support me in a sitting position whilst snuggled up on a flat camp bed/air mattress.
I've done some web searches and found back support pillows and similar devices, bit they all seem to need something behind (e.g. a headboard) to brace them. I'd be after something self supporting and portable.
I don't want to buy a whole new bed (I've seen some great ones on angling websites that are half bed and half chair) I just want something that'll work on our existing air bed.
Any ideas/recommendations?
Thank you.

I used to use an inflatable wedge shaped pillow. Not a perfect solution but did work and didn't take up much room when not in use. Just googled them and there seem to be plenty on Amazon.

Do a Google search for ‘Beach Back Rest’. These give you back support to read while sitting on the beach and might also work for your purpose.

I got one of those for my van, however, I have it wedged against the back of the driver's seat instead of sitting on the extended mat.

Bewarned not to Google while at work, as some of the images returned may not be safe for a work environment!

Anything along these lines...

I have something similar. (There's many brands and colours available, all on a very similar theme).

I shove my camping pillow inside, and support just from the neck up, whilst laid out, or hutch myself up further, so I'm more sat up (The seat supporting more upper back/shoulders).
All just placed atop my floor based SIM, whilst in a sleeping bag.

Easy to remove and place out of the way (folds flat) once you're ready to lay down & get some kip.

Works a treat, and relatively cheap.

That style has the added benefit of not needing room behind it for the mechanism.

Downside is: they're not very wide, so a SIM can't be placed within it.

Agreed.
There are (or have been?) "extra wide" ones available, but few and far between, and still not wide enough to take the SIM width.
I have two of those very small camping-specific pillows, stuffed as one in a pillow-case, and lay that within the seat.

As it's sat ON the SIM, it can tip up (back), or fall closed when not in use (depending on the "balance" of the pillow position), or when getting into bed/into position, and you often have to fidget to get in position, but once there, it works (very) well and serves it's purpose, whether laid out with just the head/neck supported, or sat more upright.

I couldn't justify the cost of the job-specific sleeve thing you can get to turn the Exped SIM into a chair, and it just didn't seem practical enough for my minimal needs, as I don't sit/lay in bed reading very often, but this cheapo seat option was worth the punt for me... and it proved to be a good compromise.

Muckerette got hers (a bit too narrow for my liking) for the bargain price of £3 in a GO sale!
I wasn't interested initially, but after trying hers out, I opted for a less flowery design(!) and slightly wider option for the princely sum of £12 if I recall.
Even for short-term/little use items, they are an absolute bargain, and very much worth having in the kit.
