Good afternoon all...
We used our pop-roof camper in anger for the first time last weekend, and our 6 year old Granddaughter slept in the pop top..
For this outing we just used the mattress from a fold out sofa bed that we have in the back room, which whilst being very comfy for her, was VERY bulky to lug around (it filled the rearmost seat/storage area!)

Now I did intend to just get a decent SIM for the roof bed but after this weekend, it became apparent that "making up" the top bed, and having to work just from the one end,and "throw" the sleeping bag & blanket(s) down the bed in the hope they all stayed lined up, was a pain in the backside! (and as we know, sleeping bags are slippy and get twisted enough as it is!)

So...I was wondering whether a "ready bed" (air bed with sleeping bag attached) would be up to the job?
Over the years I've never had much success with air beds and I'd always assumed that these "ready beds" were just meant for a "sleepover" in the house?

Has anyone any thoughts/advice on the matter?

I would say; get up there yourself, and let the kid have the van bit. Its much safer for her - and warmer. I wouldnt fancy our grand daughters up on a van roof in a flimsy 'tent' contraption with the nutters that are around today.

What, you think that all the crazies on campsites are going to slash the pop-top roof sides and drag the occupant out?!

To the OP: never tried a ready bed but I suspect it might be too high for your pop-top. Have you thought about a Duvalay? Personally, I'd just use a SIM to fit plus a duvet. I bet she loves it up there!

Hi
Yes, you are probably right re: too high(there is an airbed/sleeping bag thing on the Argos website but the reviews are poor).
I think just a decent sim (with duvet or sleeping bag) is what we'll end up with.
She loved it up there! she was really snug and cosy (and with a string of twinkly led lights, it became her "den"..

This SIM (Outdoor Revolution Top of the Pops) suits most pop-top campers and if you're handy with a sewing machine you could make your own Duvalay type cover to hold things in place (found this on another forum):

Simply take 2 single duvet covers and arrange them long sides together and machine sew leaving 15" at top end not sewn,
along the bottom edge you now have both openings top one for duvet and bottom one for memory foam (or SIM). Stitch the two edges at bottom together to seal bottom edge but still allow duvet and memory foam/ SIM to be easily removed.

You have more choice of colour, and paterns, choice of duvet and memory foam / SIM etc than a ready made one.

Thanks for that Lidds, I hadn't really thought of making duvet cover "pockets" for the various components to sit in..that would certainly help neaten things up.

Having said that, we have had a bit more of a "play around" with the van today..and we've had a bit of a "eureka" moment (or perhaps a "why were we so daft?" moment? )

Now ordinarily in "transport mode" we leave the bed-boards out because-
a) They reduce the headroom in the back by 3+inches b) They are b***dy heavy, being 1" thick plyword, plus the carpet covering!) and c)When they are in place, you can't easily see if the pop-top sides are folding nicely or getting trapped when it is being lowered?

Having said (waffled! ) all of that, we now see that for "going away mode" we could fit the bed-boards prior to travelling (we'd just have to be extra careful when lowering the roof, with one of us outside making sure it wasn't trapped)AND with the boards in place, we would just about have room to leave our current "sofa bed mattress" laying on top of them, without it forcing the roof up off it's seals.

This in itself would save a lot of the "faff" when setting up the roof bed.

Thanks again for going to the trouble to post your tips/advice

Sounds like a plan!

It's many years since we had a pop-top Dub Tub (wish we'd kept it - would be worth a fortune now ) and the whole bed base (with attached mattress) elevated with the roof (Westfalia conversion) so I'd not realised that bed boards can be removable nowadays.

Your idea sounds much more workable.

Good luck with it.
