Why are porch awnings always placed over the doors? You would gain more space if the door & step were outside of the awning and your caravan layout permitted this too happen.

why not just go the whole thing and put the porch on the other side? lol, dont be daft! whats the point of having it anywhere else other than over a door? and if the issue is gaining more space then buy a FULL SIZE awning!

If you get a short enough one then this would be possible.

Are you gaining that much space if you remove the steps?

XVI yes?

As well is two words!

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

I think the clue is in the name, and the dictionary definition explains: "porch [noun] - A covered structure in front of the entrance to a building"

If it didn't cover the entrance door then it'd be 'shed/utility awning'! .... and indeed you could fit it on the other side of the van!

I've seen smaller awnings placed beside the door on very odd occasions, and the general response from fellow caravaners is "WTF! - who want's to go tell them how it should be fitted!" . Think that attitude is probably spurred by the rigmarole the users seem to go though getting stuff in and out of the awning, constantly coming in and out of the caravan and then in and out of the awning door as well, sometimes in the rain!

As an avid user of awnings (I've got 2, both porch types, of different sizes for different types of use) which I truly use as a porch for shedding/storing wet/muddy outdoor clothing and wiping the dog down before letting in the van, and storing stuff I don't want/need in the van, also as a larger sheltered (sun or rain) living space, I think using it as an isolated 'stand alone' as opposed to integrated into caravan type space would be hugely inconvenient. The space occupied by the steps is about one tenth or less of the overall ground space, and I tend to use the space under the steps as storage for things I don't access frequently (awning storage bag etc.), so not entirely wasted space anyway, if things are that critical, you simply need a bigger awning!

I guess it depends on what you want to use it for, but for me and all my caravaning friends, in the true definition of a porch (/conservatory) it proves it's greatest and most flexible worth.
