We purchased a Tom Tom with lifetime European map updates included around 3 years ago,the trouble is you can only navigate to places or postcodes it has stored in its system and believe you me there are tens if thousands missing as we have found to our grief on quite a number of occasions.
As frequent visitors by car to Germany ( this is where we wanted to throw it out of the car window ) can anyone recommend a decent Sat Nav for the car ?
I’ve tried using Google Maps on my iphone but much prefer a dedicated Sat Nav unit.

On my TomTom Go5100 which I've had a few years now, I can enter Latitude/Longitude co-ordinates, instead of Postcodes/Names to locate places without postcodes or narrow down more precisely places that have a postcode covering a huge area.

On the 'Search' page, at end of entry line, click the 'Whole World' button and it brings up a menu where you can pick Lat/Long from, then enter Co-Ords in a number of different formats.

My Sat Nav was nearing top of the range, so maybe not a feature on other lesser models. The Co-Ords are what is obtained from the Satellites, they are then 'translated' by the unit into other formats such as Postcodes, so the unit is working with Co-Ords anyway, though they may not be accessible to the user at the whim of TomTom.

Used to have a Garmin Sat Nav years ago, having got to grips with the TomTom and it's sometimes less than obvious features, now think it is superior, and Garmin pulled the 'lifetime' traffic/camera/fuel etc. data feed after only a couple of years or so, so p**sed me off no end!

Tried all sorts of Apps on the phone, and come down to 2 that I'm happy with, yes, one of them is TomTom, the other is Navmii. Hate with a vengeance WAZE which picks the most diabolical routes in my mind, may be nano-seconds quicker, but often horribly tortuous and hard work to drive! Always try and avoid Apps that don't store maps locally, as if you lose the phone signal you totally lose your guidance!

My Renault Captur was built in France and has a built in sat-nav. This sat-nav has loads of minor roads missing and only covers the UK. My French car doesn't have France on it's sat-nav, so it's better to use a Tom Tom in England and in France.

I have a basic Garmin Nuvi 55 which has lifetime map updates( about 3 times a year). It takes a micro SD card up to 32GB so no problem of storage.

The software for the POI loader is so straight forward that things like Archies's are a doddle.

It costs well under £100 and is far superior to on board computer that keeps sending me back to Wolfsberg in Germany when driving to Devon.

Garmin every time! Get the 'Camper' version and you can key in the size of your unit.

We have a Go Basic and it lets you enter lat and long co-ordinates. Think they all do.

Might be worth a try for you urbster before splashing the cash?

My Garmin Nuvi 200 has just been binned after many years service. The lifetime updates are still in force but are no longer compatible with the device, a conversation with support confirmed that even with a SD card, it's had it. I've been offered 30% off a new device but to be honest, the Iphone app (or a map) seems just as good for my needs.

Google maps will also work without any mobile data signal if you download the areas you are going to as offline maps.
