Hi all

I bought a camping stove heater attachment from Ebay (see link) and when I attached it and heated it up, horrible fumes started coming off it. I think it was the black paint on the top burning.

But I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here? It's meant to be heated up on the stove obviously. So why put paint on it that's not heat resistant??

Probably the lubricant used during manufacturing had not been removed completely.

Not unusual, and it should burn off eventually.

However, I would advise burning it again outside in the open and away from anything just in case.

Not keen on the look of it as it is open flame and I would worry about it toppling over when it is hot and setting something alight.

I agree with DK,take it outside and burn it off completely.
The photos show stoves sold by Chinese suppliers and the seller is GUANGZHOU HEKE DIANZISHANGWU YOUXIANGONGS, none of their other products seem to be aimed at the camping market. Expect low quality and health and safety.
I don't think I'd ever trust this thing inside a tent, there may be a reason why the Campingaz heaters are so expensive.
Accept that you've lost your money on it, give it a 1* review and describe it as a health and safety fire hazard, perhaps Ebay will ban it.

An expensive and inefficient form of heating and I would not use it in a tent. As DK said the fumes were probably the paint burning.

The seller's address is given as Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, but the sellers postcode given is an address in Kelso, Scotland.

Jesus! No way would i have this in a tent. Its an accident waiting to happen. Im not sure id have any gas 'heater' in a tent - 'camping-gaz' or otherwise.

But most things that get hot for the first time will smell. Even a cars exhaust. So you cant say this is a 'bad' product because its burning off residue.

From the photos in the ebay listing, that heater is reaching up to 1200 degrees Celsius to be glowing orange! There will be as previously stated, lubricants/protective coatings used in manufacture burning off, very few paints are capable of withstanding those sorts of temps, so that's also likely to be burning off or at least releasing the more volatile elements of it's make up, at those sorts of temperatures likely even molecular metal fumes are created!

New, it's bound to smell, most heating devices advise that fumes will be given off when first used. I suspect from the materials used, it will always smell to some degree, even heating plain steel to those temperatures you can normally smell the metal itself!

As a product, I wouldn't be happy using anything glowing red hot without any kind of protective guard around it! As a general rule, using gas appliances within a closed tent is unwise (Carbon Monoxide fumes risk! - https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/carbon-monoxide-poisoning/), and doubt it's powerful enough outdoors to have lot of effect, most radiant heaters have parabolic reflectors to direct max heat towards a relatively small target area, you will benefit from maybe 25% of the surface radiation, the rest is just heating the entire world!

As stated, of Chinese origin, not a nation best regarded for their product quality, nor consumer concerns! You are probably doing nothing 'wrong' as such, beyond buying a poor product in the first place! Sorry to be harsh.

I wouldn't touch that with a bargepole; it's going to be inefficient outdoors and downright dangerous in a tent, on so many levels. If you can't go EHU to use a fan heater, better and safer to use hot water bottles.

Sorry, am more alarmed than impressed by that thing!

Not something I would consider buying or recommend to anyone.

I have one it but did not give of fumes but I had it on a few times as a test run before trying it in a tent so I would of burnt of anythig on it.

But it is not good as a heater I found it not to give of any more heat than putting a kettle on the burner and boiling it. The kettle had the bonus of being able to make your self a hot drink that had a greater warming effect than the heating element. it is basicaly a wast of gas.

might try the heater below next.

This heater will burn through those aerosol gas cans at a phenomenal rate, if you really must have an outdoor heater get one that uses a refillable cylinder. Calor Gas would be ideal but they just stopped refilling their smaller cylinders and have discontinued the aluminium lite ones.

If you must camp in cold weather use a smaller tent and get a better sleeping bag. If you want to be warm in the evening go to the pub. Go to the local sports center during the day and have a sauna.

In a sealed tent this heater will use up all the oxygen and start to pump out carbon monoxide, you'll quietly fall asleep and not wake up again.
In an open awning the heat will simply blow away in the wind.
Spend your money on good outdoor winter clothing.
