Likewise, my decrepitude is beginning to make climbing out of an ordinary air bed if not awkward, at least a noisy affair with far too many ooos and arrrs to entertain the neighbours!
Bought a double/convertible air bed from Lidl (middle aisle limited offer) a few years ago, you could clip the two singles together side by side as a single height double bed, or stacked as a double height single bed. IIRC, think they were under £20. Very successful and comfortable it was too.
They were quite deep beds, so perhaps better height than many even as a single, but perfect as a double depth stack.
Couple of points, don't just stack two ordinary beds on top of each other, think you'll find they'll be too 'wobbly' and will likely slip apart, you NEED them to attach to each other for stability (mine have 3 straps/clips on each side), and a stack of 3 would be like sleeping on a jelly, if indeed you could stay on top long enough to get to sleep!
So yes, it's possible, and IMHO VERY successful. .... using the right beds of course!
