we have one of those small portable camping stoves that run on butane canisters, and I was wondering if the same canister could be used with those garden weed burner things (theres one in Lidl at the moment).

Any thoughts?

If you mean a suitcase style stove then I think not, the connections are different. Lidl's website shows the type of canister that you need.

The weed burners use screw on connectors like you get on Coleman c300 gas canisters. The briefcase type stoves use a push and twist fit aerosol connector. There are adapters but I wouldn't recommend for a weed burner. Potential problems are that it would be a loose fit. A lot of stress would be on the connector. Also, the aerosol canisters are meant to be in a certain position due to an internal breather tube. Having it the wrong way can lead to flaring. They are butane only and don't last as long.
I have used the adapter with remote feed backpacking stoves hence my thoughts on suitability. The long screw on canisters specifically for weed burners are readily available and last a long time. They are the same as plumbers use. I have used them in the past for remote feed backpacking stoves and are cheap and reliable. I wouldn't use the aerosol canisters except on their specific attachments.
